I am starting my WIP thread. I am hoping to expand my skills from you Lunatics.

I am going to start with a Space Marine I modified yrs ago. I should have bought a fresh model but o'well. I am going to try many techniques on the same mini. I will try to explain the who what when and where I am trying these new Techniques. I am going to work on NMM and RMM. Try different ways to paint: going from Shadow to Highlight and highlight to shadow.

I have blocked on basic colors.View attachment 67471View attachment 67472View attachment 67473View attachment 67474

I tend to resize on a phone app and post straight from the phone here - something around 700 pixels wide should be good

Bderricks Ty for the info on Imgur. I signed up and hope it works better than the large pics I posted from my Phone.

waiting go see how this guy go..

as for image resize, there is nice one for mobile, I am on IOS so not sure for other brand,
the app name is “Image Size” from vsmedia.de, you get some add in between when you save hou image but if you can live with it it is free to use.

I use that on my iPad and thats work pretty well.

Well after launching the Space Marine across the room (they do not fly well but they can crash beautifully) after much frustration.
I have decided on another project, it seems I am a better sculptor than painter...O'well. I am planning on modifying a Reaper miniature into an Adaptus Machanus. Fun Fun. Here is the plan...View attachment 67850 to View attachment 67849
What do you think??

That looks like it will be a cool conversion. Btw you gotta get the jump pack marines if you want them to fly across the room like that :D

Question....when I start sculpting I need help on the right materials to use. For sculpting I have Green stuff, Aves Apoxie sculpt and Super sculpty. I am wondering what would be the best material to make thin portions of the robes. I will need to roll it out thin, apply, then place folds. the hard part will be material over the arms and making a hood. I do not want it to be brittle and crack after doing so much work during the modification process.

ReferenceView attachment 67868 for problem:

I keep trying to make these smaller in Igur.....and it is making me go GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

Image size for iOS works well enough for resizing images.

Afraid I can't help with sculpting, I only ever use greenstuff and I'm pretty naff with it

Something I've seen done for robes and capes etc. Which might help is using the metal from a drinks can as an armature, cut it to the rough shape you want and put the basics foods in then glue it on and cover in your putty of choice. I recently got some milliput white which is great stuff, you can use water with it to smooth it off and it can be sanded glass smooth with high grade sand paper, it's messier than gs though and maybe more brittle, not much sculpting experience so take it with a grain of salt :)

I have not had a chance to work with Aves Apoxie sculpt before. So i dove right into the deep end of the pool and gave it a go.

My 2 cent review. I found Aves very easy to mix 50/50, one is white and the other grey, you can see the the grey disappear when mixed thoroughly. It behaves well when fresh and holds its shape for sharp edges in about 10-15 minutes, sculpting tools work best when wet. It is not sticky as green stuff tends to be. Due to this after it dries it is very hard to add more material such as Aves or anything else that is not sticky on application. I have not had a chance to sand the material but evens out well with a wet finger or tools. It also is easy to drill and remove material with a dremel.

My sculpt on the Adaptus. The dangly bits where heavily washed as to not cover them when I sculpted with apoxie. The rob is pretty much finished except for sanding. I still need to add mechanical bits at bottom of robe.

Looking good so far. This should be a cool model when you're done!

I might switch to GS for the frayed edges of the cloak. Sometimes I'll take a really thin ribbon about 1" long and pull on it to get some holes, tag ends, etc. I think the elasticity of GS would work better than e.g. Milliput. I've never worked with Aves, though, so you'll have to judge what works best.

Can't help you much with practical tips, as I'm a poor sculptor at best, but that already looks pretty nice and billowing.

The flowing robes look like they are going to be pretty impressive. I'm a crap sculptor myself so I'll be following your WIP with a view to improving said skills. I could be wrong but the original mini looks like a Cryx Iron Lich Lord from Privateer Press. Regardless, your robes look better than the stock ones.
