Valejo Game Color or Model Color

Hi there everyone!!!

I\'m going to buy Vallejo paint box (this with 72 paints) and may question is which should I take: VGC or VMC???

1.What is the difference between them? 2.Which one is better for painting minis?
3.In the VGC box there are all paints from the VGC range, and what about VMC? Which paints are there?

Thanks for any reply, and please forgive me my bad language.

They are both great for painting minis with paint brush.
I did a test last week and the model color has a finer grind to the pigment and flows better through an air brush. Biggest difference is color selections. I have a mixed collection and am very pleased with them.
Welcome to the forums !!! Many painters here have english as a second language never fear.

go for the model colour (vmc)

i am currently changing from game colour to model colour.

the model colour is gives a much more natural finish and can be watered down much farther than the game colour.

ask mick22 for his opinion, i can garauntee he will say go for model colour ;)

Migrating from One colour set to the other is quite a big leap, but it\'s one with a soft landing.

Either colour range has it\'s benefits. Game Colour is a perfect match for GW\'s range, so if you are used to the Citadel colours there is no problem.
Model Colours have the edge on the range of colours and therefore have far more flexibility in selection.

One thing to bare in mind with Model Colours is the fact that there are some very pigment heavy colours (Such as those based on Ochre colours) and they can seem very granular when you put them on the pallette. This means of course that the thinning of the paint has to be a higher dilution resulting in more coats to get an even coverage.

Thanks GP :D
I think the main difference between the ranges is that the GC is a bit more hard wearing as you would expect as it\'s aimed at Gamers,
the reason they match up with GWs colors is they were originally produced to replace them and for whatever reason GW declined, so Vallejo released them (feel free to correct me on this one)
With the Model Color you\'ve simply got a far greater color choice to pick from,

A couple of coats of varnish... your good to go, I always Gloss first for protection (it\'s harder) then a couple of coats of Matt Varnish,

I was hoping to have some new stuff in stock, including a couple of the Hobby Box (72) sets plus some of the new water & stone effects (check the new catagories in my ebay shop), but I\'ve got a bit of a cash flow problem
just been \'stiffed\' over £600 :flame::mad::flame:

@inferno: PM or email me your address & I\'ll post you out the VMC color chart it\'s better in real life

First of all thanks for the reply!

You know... the problem is that I have almost whole range of Citadel paints and I feel comfortable with it (colour range not paints). I want to change my palete couse 1/2 of my paints is \"out of order\", and i think that Valejo\'s are far more better or at least their bottles are smarter...

The question is what will You do at my place?
Buy VGC and then start collecting VMC to support the primary colour range
or buy VMC?

Does enybody knows which VMC paints from the whole range are in the hobby box?

cheers

Both of the paint series are different
VGC is like Citadel\'s range - but more durable, a tad stronger pigment , thouygh metallics are crap (the paints taste better than citadels:p )

VMC is over 220 paints alltogether giving many more colours tthan any other range (as far as I know), they are less durable , and varnishes are needed in order to hold the paints (metallics based on alcohol are very good)....

there\'s also VAC (valejo air colour meant for airbrushes) It\'s not really this economic , but they are ok

VMC Color chart can be viewed at Vallejo\'s Website
the numbers in black are the actual product codes, the smaller red numbers are simply their positions on the display rack and should not be used for ordering

@Inferno:
hang on while I compile the list of colors, they are marked with an asterix (a little star symbol, not a small Gaul with a big friend called Obelix lol lol )

it really would be a lot easier to send you the chart :D

I used to be a die-hard VMC guy, but the more I use the VGC the more I like them. The colors are better for VMC, but I like the way the VGC \"works\".

If I were you I\'d buy 3 colors of each and try using them- see what you think. They also vary based on the color and formula- so don\'t be afraid to mix.

To back up what Scott says...

Model Color is primarily aimed at the Military Modeller, who, by in large make static display models. ie: the model is made, painted, and put on display. Generally they are not then moved around too much, and when they are, very carefully. :D

Game Color is aimed at the Wargamers, who do the exact opposite, once they are painted, and are constantly moving their models \'around\'. It (VGC) therefore needs to be considerably harder wearing than VMC

now thats sorted I\'d just like to say if you use a product for a purpose other than what it was intended for, you can\'t blame the product........can you?

Didn\'t want to make a seperate post for this but I have a question about the 72 paint suitcase of Vallejo Game Colors, do the 72 paints include the inks/mediums or only the colors plus

Smokey Ink
Medium Glaze
Matt Varnish
Satin Varnish
Gloss Varnish

I would have to order them offline and most the sites I found do not have an exact list except \"contains all 72 Vallejo Game Colors\" but if you go to look at singles of Vallejo Game Colors there are more than 72 items and the first 72 are the regular colors plus the items I listed.

Thanks

I just started following this thread so bear with me if you will. I\'m trying out VGC and was wondering how the dilution rate compares to that of Citadel and VMC. I would think that VMC could take quite a bit more water than VGC. Any recommended dilution rates for VMC and/or VGC?

Oh, and is it me or is the VGC Bloody Red REALLY bright?

Thanks,
Mark

Go for mixture

Hi Inferno

I use VMC, but along with GW. The VMC is far smoother to apply with a little watering as usual or flow enhancer.

Biggest advantage for me is lifetime. They are screw top in stopper bottle so don\'t suffer the dry out as GW. Last longer on the old wet pallatte as well. Check out the minotaur in the gallery. Minly VMC especially the horns.

They mix well with GW, but are not as tough I use gloss coat then matt coat to protect.

Try just a few for now. You can get them for 75p a bottle on ebay.:D
