Valkor (Grenadier barbarian)

Got started on this guy - he is a rare Grenadier Fantasy Warriors barbarian, never listed in any of their catalogs and one of the several figures released just before the company went under. He is one of my favorites from that line.

So far the boots, fur, wood axe handle, and bronze/gold parts are done. I am thinking blonde hair and a bluish steel axe blade. The facial expression on this guy is intense - I will have to get a close-up after I do his skintones.

May not look a whole lot different, but the leather parts (belt, axe handle wrapping, pouch, dagger hilt) are done. Once the claw necklace is done its on to the skin.

And posting these pics is paying off already - didn\'t notice the lack of contrast between the axe handle wrapping and the handle in the middle section, so went back and darklined that area :)

have you still got some work to do on the skin tones? cause they look a little funky IMHO. Great looking mini tho. I tried to get hold of all those barbarians but couldnt get em anywhere in OZ. Maybe one day.

I haven\'t even started on the skintones except to put down a basecoat. So \"funky\" is putting it nicely lol

Mirliton re-released most of the barbarians from this line (not this one though).

Mirliton Barbarians

There was also a barbarian chariot, a giant, and another barbarian like this guy but with a sword held out at his waist level that were never in a catalog and I would love to get my hands on.

So we can expect even more barbarian crazyness from you? Of course what else would we expect.

Believe it or not, I have 3 other projects on the table and one is NOT a barbarian ;)

Of course, the other 2 are the Reaper barbarian conversion I have a WIP thread started on and a female barbarian conversion based on the Frazetta painting \"Berserker\".

I haven\'t actually ordered from them - I got most of mine years ago or on ebay before Mirliton got them back out. But they are a long-standing company with more of a history with historicals from my understanding, so I would imagine they must have a good reputation to still be around? Maybe someone else has ordered from them and can verify?

Tonight I did the claw necklace and the hair. I was originally going with blonde hair, but I decided black would tie-in with the boots and fur better. So, I went for the Bisley-esque blue-black hair for the graphic novel look. Just need to do the skin and axe blade now!

Look great Mr. Barbarian King!

Those Copplestone Barbarians are so cool. I\'ve got some somewhere....should dig them out...

Thanks! I really love these old Copplestone barbarians too. You should dig yours out and paint them up - always room in the hall of the barbarian king for new clan members :D

Ok, I am trying to finish the skin tonight, and took this shot to see how it is going. I decided to post it here because a couple of people have asked me about skintones lately, so I hope this will illustrate the subtle transitions from layer to layer - this is 5 layers in with probably a few more to go. Although he is looking like a nice tanned barbarian, so maybe I won\'t go as high as I planned with the highlight layers.

I tend to get mixed feedback on the blue-black hair. Personally, I love it, I thought I got it from Bisley and Horley barbarians, but I looked and can\'t find any examples, so I guess I am not sure where it came from.

Anyway, skin is done, just need to give him some eyebrows and do the axe blade and the base. I really like his facial expression - Copplestone got some great intensity to these barbarians!

Great job on the skin. It\'s nice to see it go from the base color to the final product. The hair looks fine to me. Can\'t wait to see it when it\'s done.

Last WIP shot, I just have to finish the base. The axe is too bright I think, I will probably have to glaze it a couple times more. Oh well, here he is, hope to have him finished and posted tomorrow:
