Valkyrie Profile for PS1

I\'ve also never heard of it, what other game would you compare it to? I was recently playing Legend of Dragoon a turn-based RPG also for PS1, but the second disc was scratched pretty badly so I got stuck right after I defeat a boss.

It is hard to compare because there are no other games like it that I can think of. It is a turn based RPG and it is based on a combo system kind of like Xenogears except that instead of each character having their own unique combo moves, each character in your party is linked to a button on your control and you push different sequences of buttons to have long chain attacks.
If you want a good idea of what it is like go on youtube and what this video. You will get an idea of what the battle system is like.

The story is pretty simple. You are a valkyrie collecting souls to fight for odin in valhalla and ragnarok is coming. There are a boat load of characters to choose from and everytime you recruit a character you watch a sequence that shows how each character dies and becomes recruited by valkyrie.

It looks pretty awesome, are all the dungeons side-scroll? Either way it seems like a fun game. Legend of Dragoons, if you haven\'t played it, is also combo based but individual attacks, and you only have to smash X within a time frame but still pretty nice design. If you haven\'t played it I recommend it. I\'ll speak with one of my brothers to see if he can find Valkyrie profile where he lives and give it a try.

DAMN did not realize how rare this game is, the prices on this thing range from $40 to over $500USD, well guess i\'ll go back to painting mini\'s and watch Futurma.

Yes the entire game is side scroll with sprite characters. The original is expensive, normally around $100 on ebay, because there was a limited quantity produced and the game scratches real easily and will not work even with a minute scratch.
There is a Valkyrie Profile 2 which is available for PS2 and you can find it on ebay for cheap. It is the same type of game, side scroller, except the characters are polygonal like most games nowadays. Also in this one you play as Valkyries younger sister and it takes place 1000 years in the past so if you play this one without playing the first you will not be missing any important information. What you will find is that alot of the characters from the first game, which are dead, are alive and well in the second game. I am still playing this one and it is fun too. Combat system is the same as well except you play on a 3D plain.

I have also played Dragoon. I have a copy of it but I never play it. When I did I got to the third disc I think. It is a fun game I will have to play it soon.

Also one of the great things about VP is that you can do more damage than 9999 at one time. If you know what you are doing you can be doing over 100,000 per hit within the first 3 hours of the game on some monsters. You can also have more than 9999 life. My characters right now are only level 35 and they already have over 60,000 life. I am sick of games where everything is 9999.

I agree, 9999 is an odd number, especially to represent in binary. It\'s not really memory efficent....
1024 would make a lot more sence.

Makes you pay more attention to the fights.

Oh ya I forgot about the Lenneth game for PSP. Exact same game as the one for PS1. Also if you do not have a PSP or the money to buy the PS1 game you can always download a PS1 emulator for your computer and then download the Valkyrie Profile rom. On the video on youtube that I showed earlier the guy playing is using an emulator.
Also if you like combo based games play xenogears for PS1.
Some other chain attack games that can do alot of damage are:
Tales of Destiny
Tales of Destiny 2
Any Star Ocean game (This game lets you do insane damage and you actually get to fight against characters from VP)
Tales of the Abyss
I know there are others I just cannot think of them. If you own a PS2 definitely check out Tales of the Abyss. You can combo chain for days. Check out some of the videos on youtube. Star Ocean too
