Hey guys and girls! Im new to the site and wanted to get stuck in. Ive been painting 40k for a couple years on and off and paint to a high standard, i made the finals of this years UK Golden Demon. I use citadel paints and washes but am interested in using Vallajo. Can anybody tell me wot sort of finish i will get. Im collectiing 40k orks, and have painted quite a few models, i want to move on to vallajo as i hear you get crisper, better results but does this mean il av two different sets of models that look obviously different?

Im confused, please advise.
Thanks guys

Some people will tell you that Vallejo paints are better, some will say otherwise. Personally I recommend Citadel, but virtually any paint will get the job done.

If you mix the exact same colors, the two models will look close enough. (For example, if you used Bestial Brown on one model, pick a Vallejo color that is close and mix in something else to fine-tune it).

The finish on both ranges of paint are matte. (With the exception of a few Vallejo paints labeled \"glossy\"). If there\'s any variation between models it will be slight, and you can spray the model with some Testor\'s Dullcote to fix that.

I agree with most of what mattsterbenz says. Personally I use mostly Vallejo paints. I have the GW foundation set, and Wash set and am quite impressed by what I have used out of both.

For me V are better, why?
Well for a start there are a lot more ready made colours, so if you do use a certain colour you wont have to remix it as there is more a chance the correct shade would be already done for you. Also price.
GW 12ml = £2.s5
Vallejo 17ml between £1.50 and £2

This for me is the deal breaker. Also with the dropper bottle, I just feel I have more control over the amount I use.

But the downside to this bottle is sometimes the top get filled with paint, and then a cocktail stick is your friend ;)

ditto with cost, eye dropper bottles more choice of colours with the game colours similar range to GW then there is the model colour then sub sets for flesh etc then Panzer sets if you are into vehicles, brill colours and then Vallejo air colours pre mixed for airbrush but also excellent to use as washes and inks with a very wide range of colours.

bottom line is it is all down to personal choice.

Well, i use both. The reason why one should choose Vallejo is because they have ALOT of paints, including the GW ones, they have other names but they are essentially the same, these also have the old colors that GW dont produce anymore which i find pretty useful.

Vallejo paints also come in eyedrop bottles, this can be both irritating and wonderful.

It can get clogged, but thats not the biggest fear, just sorta irritating.

The thing that gets me going is that sometimes the dropper gets caught in the cap, and you end up either trying to pull it out or you have to screw the cap on the bottle and try again.

The good thing about Vallejo is that you dont need a brush to apply the paint to your palette, and that saves time and you dont have to fear that your paints will get another color in them. Pretty useful stuff!

Also Vallejo sometimes tend to need a good shaking, but this I do on every paintbottle i have wether its vallejo or games workshop.

So yeah, if you like go buy some vallejo, you wont get dissapointed, i feel that GW has lost its zang since they gave up all bright and good colors, including the inks...

It\'s easy enough. First, the faq on it is a little hard to locate, but you can see it here. A little south of middle on the BB Code portion is the format for putting in an image. The basics of it is that you put your pictures up on a host (your own location, Flickr, PhotoBucket, etc) then put the link to it in between the [ img ] & [ /img ] tags when you\'re writing the message.

I use both kinds as well. Since vallejo has such a large amount of various colors it makes finding what you like very easy. I am a big fan of brown rose and dark sea blue. Having an eye dropper bottle is not that much of a plus for me since the paint tends to dry in the dropper and when you squeeze the bottle, and are unaware of a clog, half a bottle worth of paint will come shooting out and waste the paint. So watch for that. But the paint is great. Large amount of pigment which is nice. Just make sure that if you dilute the vallejo you use a medium or the pigments will sink to the bottom of your mix of water and paint making your painting very unpleasant.

Granddad!
just be aware you have 2 main ranges aimed at modelers, Model Color and Game Color
Model Color:
Some 200+ colors, aimed primarily at the Military peeps. They are meant for static display models, which are put on a shelf and looked at, and are therefore less robust, hence the need to ensure you give them at least a good coat of Gloss(it\'s harder) varnish, followed by a Matt coat, if you are using them for gaming minis

Game Color:
as the name suggests aimed at the gaming community (us). These paints are an entirely different formulation, not just renamed MC paints. They are harder wearing and designed to be handled
there are less colors in this range, about 100 or so I think

hope that helps :D

Better yet: at first the Game Color range was made to match the Citadel/GW range of colours, even the names were alike. The \'recipe\' for the paints though is different from GW\'s.

Personally I use mostly Vallejo model colour. I have some Game Colour and a few citadel colours (mainly metallics).
But don\'t forget: all of them are completely intermixable. So you can mix and match, and create any colour you\'d want to use.

I love the Vallejo Model Color line. I even enjoy their mettalics and the different colors vs. the standard Gamey style one from all the other lines. The eye dropper bottle is a plus for me as well.

I also use the Vallejo Game Color, and Citadel Washes and Foundation paints, but I find it\'s the model color I always wind up going to.

SS Cam Black-Brown is IMO a MUST for all painters!

Vallejo makes some of the best paints and the colour range is amazing. I recently purchased some empty bottles by Vallejo for mixing. I keep one filled with water, this really helps when diluting paints.

Tap the bottle base firmly on the bench/work surface one the lids on. Helps force the paint down the bottle away from the dropper end.
I\'ve taken to using an old drill to clean out/widen the nozzles as I\'ve found that there are quite a few where the opening is a bit too narrow for easy usage/delivery of paint.
