Vallejo Brush On Primer

Hey guys,

Couldn't find this anywhere else (probably because i'm rubbish at searching the forums!!) so thought i'd post a new thread, basically looking for some advice.

At the moment the weather here is pretty dire, we've had rain for the past few days non stop and it doesn't look like stopping anytime soon. As a result i'm unable to spray prime my models but I do have a bottle of Vallejo White Brush On Primer. Just a couple of questions really:-

Do you have to dilute it with water?
How long do you have to leave it to dry before you can start to paint the model?
Does it give as good a coverage as the spray primer?

Any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated.

Short answer - have a go

Less short - a little thinning and 2 coats should do it. 10 minutes is heaps? Not long with thin coats to be safely dry. Undercoat a few things at once so you are cycling through them and the first mini is ready for a second go after you've done the last of them.

Water is fine for thinning that stuff to your desired consitency. It's all I've used (sprayed through an airbrush) for many years. Drying times, again, shot through a brush it's rapid but I let a piece sit for a day or longer after priming to allow for 'outgassing' which may or may not be a problem with the stuff but I err on the safe side and let it sit for a day anyway since it's what I've always done. A last note to make sure you're extra anxious about it, is that I've heard of people ruining their best brushes by brushing on this kind of primer with them. I've never used my best brushes to do this because I've heard those stories so I use cheapo synthetics to do this task If I need to use a brush to touch up any spots or anything. This may be just folkore but I'm never really in the mood to test it with my best brushes.

I don't really see how that can happen, but I also didn't see how it could happen that something would stick to my clay shaper and yet it did, and ruined it, even though forum people told me it was impossible. Yet somehow, I guess through magic, my handy clay shaper was ruined regardless. That damnable meddlesome magic.

No, but it might help.

Once it's touch dry you can paint over it. But it would be better to let it cure if you have the time, especially if you want to do anything that might tend to rub the surface, like drybrushing.

Does it give as good a coverage as the spray primer?
No.

Searching is fairly easy, but ideally use Advanced Search before typing in your search terms, then just select all the variables you want, like which forum to search, what date range to search in (if any) and whether you'd like it to come back with posts or threads, "Show Results as:" Multiple search terms by itself will really help narrow down the results, so here you'd use Vallejo, brush and primer or Vallejo, brush-on and primer.

Out of curiosity, is this a ventilation issue or are you worried about humidity?

Hi there,

sorry to hijack the topic but I bought this primer and tried it yesterday on a plastic mini. I had troubles applying it in a uniform way, the paint did not adhere very well to the mini.
I am wondering if it might be related to the primer itself or to the prep of the mini (I put the mini in warm soapy water and brush it with a tooth brush for a little while, then rinsed everything with warm water).

Am I doing something wrong? any advice on how to solve the problem? (I don't have access to primers spray bottles where I currently live)

(I re-started painting recently after more than 10 yrs inactivity and in the old days my minis were made of metal and I was using a spray to apply the primer...)

thanks in advance for the advices!

I love Vallejo brush on primer. Usually 2 coats thinned with water and I'm good to go.

Gaahl, if it beaded up and basically dribbled off, then you most likely didn't clean the mini well enough. I do the same thing, warm soapy water and a toothbrush and it happened to me too. Are you using a liquid dish soap, like Dawn or similar? Something that breaks up grease? That will help but doesn't cure the problem entirely. I now scrub it like crazy with the toothbrush, I mean I get after the darn thing. lol! With metal minis especially I can now see the soap turning sorta yellowish color...it's faint but it's there...and then I rinse thoroughly. I can see it with resin & plastic too but not quite as much. I pat dry but then let it set for awhile, usually an hour or to just to make sure it's really dry.

That pretty much cured the problem. If it does bead up on me, it's usually because I missed a spot in a crevasse or something.

Thanks a lot for the answer! :)

I took the usual liquid soap I use to wash dishes but I certainly didn't scrub hard enough! (only a minute or so per piece) I'll give it another try, harder and longer this time!
