On the tricky subject of crackle glazes...
I\'ve never had that much success with Vallejo Crackle Glaze but when it has worked it has been quite amazing.
The first time I tried it I just painted it over an acrylic colour basecoat. It dried but didn\'t crack.
The next time I painted it over an acrylic colour basecoat and tried to force the drying with a hairdryer to speed up the drying process and force the cracks. It curled up and lifted off the paint surface!
So I went off and bought this.
Two part preparation. Paint surface with acrylic colour.
Paint on part 1. Leave it to dry.
Paint on part 2. Leave it to dry.
It cracks.
Rub in some oil paint, preferably a darker colour than the basecoat and then wipe off the excess to leave the paint in the cracks. All good.
However I noticed that the Part 1 consisted of a very thinned PVA. A flexible base on which the rapid drying Part 2 can shrink and crack.
So I returned to the Vallejo Crackle Glaze. Painted an acrylic base colour. Then painted on a thin coat of heavily thinned PVA. Let it dry, then painted on the Vallejo Crackle Medium. Now, when the Vallejo Crackle dried it produced thousands of tiny beautiful cracks.
This didn\'t happen every time though and I\'m still experimenting with it. But the scale of the cracks would be perfectly suitable for 28mm figures.
