OK I\'m looking to try out some Vallejo Model Colour. What colours should I get to start out with, testing the paints? My budget is about 8-12 pots of paint - any suggestions?

This should probably be in the painting forum rather than general discussion...

Some paints I regularly use:

Beige
Ivory
Burnt umber

My recommendation is to have a look and choose the paints you like :)

There have been plenty of discussions about this before so if you do a search of the forums you can probably come up with plenty of good advice.

Fleshtones, reds, blues.........I could make 200+ suggestions, :D
seriously, just look at the colors you use most and base your choices around them

I can post you a color chart if you pm me your address

It\'s nearly impossible to pick out 8-12 pots that are the most important. I\'ve got approximately 150 different pots and of course I don\'t use all of them to the same extent. The most frequently used are Ivory, Pale greyblue, Basalt grey, London Grey, Beige Brown, German Cam. Black Brown, Mahogany Sand, Flat Flesh, Pale Flesh, Cavalry Brown, Flat Red, Oxford Blue, German WWII Luftwaffe Blue, Stone Grey, Green Brown, Ochre Yellow, Ochre Brown, Ochre Green and probably a few more. It all depends on your painting style.

i had the very same problem when i first ventured into vallejo. i could afford 14 pots + p&p so this is how i decided:

firstly what do you paint most frequent?

is it an army, if so pick the colour scheme and select your colours around that. for example if your doing an eldar biel tan army youll want greens and whites, but if your doing an ultra marines army youll want blues and golds.

prefered style of painting?

i went for some yellows brown greys and white becuase i really wanted too try out NMM but if your not into that then metallics are alyways usefull. also if you like using them (which i dont hehe) inks would be usefull aswell

and base colours:

all colours can be made from blue red and yellow so thats a good place to start... aswell as a black and a white for tones.

special items
vallejo also stock some handy little extras suck a flow improver and retarder which are pretty much the same price as the paints and are extremely handy, especially if your working on something special like a competition mini. 1 thing everyone MUST have is \'smokey ink\' its great stuff, similar too an ink but better, its like a dark brown wash.... a really awesome addition too your paint set, can be used for all sorts.

hope this helps

Or you could just buy the \"basic\" set. I got mine on ebay cheap.
You are guaranteed to use a basic red, blue, white, black, gold, silver.

I started with that set and have bought others. For example, if you are doing a lot of browns, get the horse color set.
You could just buy the individual colors you want, but it\'s much cheaper to get the sets and you are going to buy them anyway eventually.

Not true, but that\'s another discussion. I agree that getting all (or most) primary and secondary colors is a good idea. Carmine red is a nice red, ultramarine blue and Intense blue are nice blues, and flat green and park green flat are nice greens, in my opinion. One strength of VMC is in it\'s many interesting browns and greys, so don\'t overlook them.

Many VMC colors are very similar to each other, so when this is the case, just choose the one you like most and ignore the others.

petey, as mick sells vallejo model colour.
why don\'t you pm him.

let him know what you are painting as well as how many paints you are after.

mick will be able to give advice on which paints will probably suit your needs.

it will probably benefit you in the long run as you won\'t be buying blind, so to speak.
