Vallejo varnish

I have been thinking of moving from GW\'s spray varnish ( purity seal ) to something else for quite a while, except I haven\'t really got anything else to choose from. Some time ago I discovered that the local store had started carrying Vallejos, and I also noticed that vallejo has three different kinds of brush on varnish: Matt, Satin and Gloss Varnish. I haven\'t tested any of these and a quick googling through the web didn\'t help any, so I was wondering if any of you Cmon comrades had experience with any these varnishes, and if so, could you show some pics of your minis that have been sealed with this stuff. A link or an Image number would be sweet.

What else have tried?

I can honestly say that I have never tried the Vallejo varnishes, although I love their paints. What other brands have tried? My personal favorite for matte finishes is Testor\'s Dullcote. I use Microcoat Gloss (brush-on) over the Dullcote for gems and such.

If I get a chance to try the Vallejo\'s, I\'ll post a pic.

Cheers,
Jack

I haven\'t had any experience with the Vallejo varnish but one I am reasonably happy with at the moment is the Windsor & Newton Acrylic Matt Varnish as it gives a really matt finish however if you are not prepared to wait the recommended 24 hours for the paint to dry before you put it on then a coat of spray varnish will work well in this case.

I think my recent experience with this is if you are using the mini as a game piece but want to submit it as a photo for a competition then take the pic first then varnish it as you will lose colour and highlighting if you spray then gloss coat then use the Winsor & Newton:D

:Dok, I\'ve been using the Vallejo matt varnish for about a year, I like the brush on quality..can get in those nooks & crannys that spray misses. But it\'s not very matt looking when dry, still a bit shiny, but a couple of coats of Dull cote takes care of that.

thanks for the replies. I haven\'t tried anything else than the GWs spray, but what I\'m looking for is just a clear finish with minimum shine. It doesn\'t matter even if it takes long for the varnish to cure because I just paint minis for display.
The shine would be just fine on game figs, but since I spend over 10hours on a typical mini, it would be nice not to ruin it with glossh and shine. I\'ve heard a lot of this Testors dullcoat, still I haven\'t seen it anywhere, same goes for the windsor & newton stuff.. I guess I could pay a visit to a couple of art supply stores a look around, but I doubt that they carry those.

That depends on where you are. If you are in the UK then forget the dull coat its rarer than rocking horse \"£$%. On the other hand the Winsor & Newton you can pick up at any art supply place for about £5 per 75ml. The wait in drying time is for the actual paint to dry thoroughly not for the varnish to dry.

so the actual paint has to dry for a day before varnishing - ok - didn\'t know that, usually I just wait until its touch-dry and varnish it, let the varnish dry for a good hour and then place the mini on the shelf and admire my latest piece.. altough with my scores theres not a lot to admire :D
but anyways, if anyone has minis sealed with vallejo brush on varnish only, please , share a pic or an image number :)

I did hear mention of somewhere in London that sells it but I can\'t remember now, I think Kat posted a while back about it.
