clearly it leaves a lot to be desired, but i think the tutorial was an overall success.
next time i use this approach i plan on modifying it heavily - ill eliminate some steps i think are a bit superfluous, and include my own stylistic signatures, such as more wear-and-tear, and take it a lot slower to give it the attention it deserves. very good practice though, and it forced me to put some thought in to my own painting techniques. i typically work with thicker paint, and i usually build layers up using only a minimal number of washes; this tutorial emphasizes the opposite approach.
i have no idea what i was thinking with the base - an ancient ruined computer i guess. i thought it might help tell a story of the guardian in a way, but i dont think it was very successful. perhaps if i spent more time painting/flocking it, it would look better. next time.

ive been a painting machine lately, but i haven't taken the time to slow down and really push a piece to the next level. i dont see that happening anytime soon, but when i do the techniques ive been developing should serve me well.

Definately a successful attempt here. The metals feel real and have a weight to them.

I disagree on your assessment of the base. I think it adds very much to the whole flavor. It has a 'archeotech' look that works well.

I've been on a bit of a tear as well, painting loads more than I usually do. I'm enjoying myself with it, and trying to let it flow naturally to see where that takes me.

I gotta check out that Automatons tutorial. Is it here on CMoN?

yeah, i was actually surprised how easy it was to generate the effect following the tutorial. didnt take all that long either - its just a series of washes with a chromatic shift and a few hilights. the tutorial is here
in the articles section: http://www.coolminiornot.com/articles/content.php?1649-metallics
im glad to hear the base had the desired effect, it was a lil wonkey and i think i must have stared at it too long. maybe ill try and perfect it in subsequent experiments.

its great painting "unchained" isnt it? i almost forgot how much fun it is to let the brush fly without expectation.
