Varghar Wolfen WIP

Hi everyone decided to post my new project, the tips and suggestions form last time I posted on WIP really helped a lot and upped my game loads. So any way here is the latest project the ubiquitous Varghar wolfen I know that loads of people have done this and a lot better than this but I absolutely love the mini first saw it years ago HAD to paint it, rackham at its best for me. Please note the finnesse whith which I rammed the figure into a block of wood with old nails; such respect I have for the sculpt LOL.

So I have sketched out the flesh, claws and hair; done the teeth and eyes (not totaly sold on the yellow eyes) and done a bit of the NMM metal scales. Got to do the gold jewelry leather bits and the axe also realy important- the base. Considering using the skeleton metal base it comes with but want to bulk it up and really want to know how to add cobwebs. Any suggestions and tips will be really well recieved.

Cheers for looking!

Do the unattached bits fit seamlessly so that you will not have to do any filling and possibly ruin the paint job after gluing them on?

There was a tutorial on cobwebs floating around here somewhere... If I recall correctly, the poster of the tutorial stretched out the cotton off of a cotton swab and glued in place. If I can find it again, I will post the link.

I like the yellow eyes against the darker skin, but I think they need a little more contrast to make them really stick out.

Yep checked that first and then painted them separately so I could access all areas

If you could find the link that would be brilliant!

Will up the contrast on the eyes also wasnt sure wether to do a bit of OSL from them or not; a bit scared of ballsing up the mini.

Found the cobweb link: http://www.coolminiornot.com/270313
See the artist's second comment under the picture.

OSL Eyes on a wolf or wolfman, unless Steve Irwin is hitting him with a spotlight, I say no, just make them brighter. My personal take on osl is that I think it looks good (if done right) on Machines, certain undead, and specific bits and bobs that would generate light.

Updated pictures moved on a bit and attached the arms done some of the axe and given it a glaze of turquoise. Colour on the photos not so good as mynatural light bulb gone pop. Any feed back on the nmm blade would be super. Cheers.

Hi everyone some better photos from a few different angles still working on the NMM its a real challenge blending it smoothly tried wet blending first to get the general gradient and then layering ever so thin with slow dry in the mix. Any suggestions to get that realy smooth finish would be appreciated. Hope you like.

Really like what you have done with the grays in this model. What color are you going to use on the unpainted part of the axe head?

looks really well so far, big thumbs up from me. dont know if this is useful but would a weak brown wash highlight him without to much of a clash between the greys?

I put graveyard earth in the grey mix but it seems to have been over powered so maybe a wash would be a good idea. Cool or warm brown wash? Just thinking that the greys I used are blue based and quite cold so maybe I should use a very thin warm brown?

just something to make it look more alive rather than a stone statue your choice keep up the good work.

Man you are really getting the hang of it. He really looks fantastic and the gold NMM is very excellent. Don't be afraid to get some colors hidden in there. I think I spy some purple in his flesh, this would make for an excellent deepest shadow on the leather. it's all about creating color harmony so that everything relates together. keep on trucking my man. I look forward to what you plan on the base.

Thanks for the support Milosh, thinking along the lines of a cavern/groto den so get to use the skeleton strewn base it comes with but beef it up with a rocky cavern floor maybee a couple of stalagmites and some cobwebs and maybee an attempt at sculpting a few tiny spiders gosh getting all excited at the prospect!

Yeah, that sounds very cool. On the cobwebs, and this is only an idea that I have never attempted so you might practice it first. What if you do use the pulled apart cotton and then sprayed it with multiple layers of dullcoat. The cotton would almost need to be single threads and then built up with the dullcoat.

Hi everyone building up the base at the moment. Green stuff stalagmites (there realy weird things when you look at photos of them all bulgy and dripy not the straight up cones I thought). Cork 'rock' layers to build it up leading to the rackham skeleton base supplied. will probably build it up a bit more as i go along. Please comment/suggest really appreciated. Hope you like. p.s. raided the wifes cotton swabs ready for doing the cobwebs!
