Varnish... help

I\'ve tried several varnishes in search for:
a) a Matte varnish that doesn\'t dull the entire model.
-and-
b) a Gloss Varnish that doesn\'t tinge the models color.

Starting with the matte varnish. I\'ve yet to find a matte varnish that doesn\'t dull metalics or certain colors on a model. I\'ve tried Vellejo\'s matte varnish and a cheaper generic matte varnish from my local hobby store, but both dulled on my test models.

Gloss varnishes I don\'t have too much trouble with, but I still notice a subtle color change after a wash on several models. I\'ve only tried the GW Gloss varnish, but I\'ve seen the same little effect in my freinds minis. I know its a little thing but It\'s one of those things that
just get to me

Any suggestions/help?

Hmm...I haven\'t yet experience colour change that\'s purely a fault of the varnish. Ya check your water or your brush? You might have just tinted the gloss varnish a bit with your painting water, or something. As for matte, why not just put a gloss coat on the area\'s you want to keep shiny BEFORE matting the mini. The rest of the mini will be matted, but it most likely won\'t be powerful enough to tone down the shine of the protective gloss.

I don\'t risk it anymore, but if you\'re gonna game...... try a layer or two of gloss, a layer of matte and then pick out the metallics with a paint-on gloss? Still trying to find the \'Holy Grail\' Dullcote......:D

I used to put a heavy, protective polyurethane gloss on my minis and the Matt coat I used removed all trace of shine with the lightest dusting...

As Spacemunkie says...gloss items such as jewels, have to be added after by brush:flip:

Color changes

Im just starting a fantasy army after many years of playing 40k, and the hue I want in reds for my Warriors of khorne I can only seem to get with washes, I tested it out on a few minis, then I sprayed them with the citadels and it lightened right up. My question is, if I get that stuff in a bottle put out by citadel is that gloss? will is bring back that hue? I also love that dark look, but using the citadel spray once again makes everything lighter...

Well then, tell me where I can get my hands on this matte!

I use Testors Dull Cote now, and while it bring almost everything down to a dead flat finish, it can\'t completely matte areas that have been glossed over first unless you put on a bunch of coats. They turn out half satin, half matte...

I don\'t think Dedwrekka wants a blindingly glossy finish, he just wants to counter the dulling effect of matte. If he did want super gloss, like on gems and stuff, then I\'d apply the gloss afterwards, too.

Most likely...Gloss makes everything look richer, vibrant, etc. I have a blood angels squad, and they look a lot better IRL with gloss on them, as it really makes them stand out. They\'re darker, look redder, and are generally just better.

You\'re gonna have to decide whether you want a flat finish, or the nice colours. If you\'re just gaming, and aren\'t planning of photographing them, I\'d go with the gloss.

And the stuff in the bottle is gloss, it might be a bit too glossy though. I\'ve never actually used GW gloss.

EDIT: Ahhh! How many times can I say \"gloss\"?

I used to buy small cans straight from my local art store (as opposed to modelling shop). I used brands which were called EFKE and Marabu...I think. They worked brilliantly erm perhaps I mean dull-ly :D

Actually both are true, I\'ve been experimenting with different odd techniques that where abandoned due to lack of usefullness. In other words I havn\'t given up on my idea of a tau Stealthsuit that has a mirror finish.

For my \'regular models\' (a loose term if you\'ve ever seen my armies) I still want the shinyness of metal, and the protection of varnish. Without dulling/lightening the whole model, or making it increadibly glossy.

I use Marabu too, dull as Dullness itself.

(That sounded..... wrong.)
