Varnishing GD entries

Just a quick question, you guys and gals who are submitting Golden Demon entries, are you planning on varnishing them or leaving them \'nude\'?
I normally varnish all the figures I paint (gloss then matte) but obviously those ones are for play or display use only and not competition.
I\'d welcome some advice \'cos once the varnish is on then obviously there\'s no going back.

Providing of course I get my ass in gear and finish them off...

gloss or semi gloss then matte.

Reason is, at my first LA GD despite very careful transport and packaging, one of my entries had chipped paint that had to be fixed at the last minute. That\'s not fun.

I usually varnish my entries. In the past it\'s normally a blast of Purity Seal before matting with Dullcote.

Not sure what\'ll be used first now though after my last demon entry got \'white mist of deathed\' by my Purity Seal. Possibly I\'ll gloss it with Future before Testors.

My main entry is closing on completion. Reckon it\'ll be done tomorrow or Wednesday :cool:

Might give me time for one more entry (if it\'s a minor one).

Ya know there\'s other guys to moan at before me. I\'m not yet the regular gold winner. Still fighting tooth\'n\'nail for Silvers and Bronzes (with the odd gold where a category hasn\'t been massively competetive).

Moan at Matt Parkes instead lol

After i´ve seen the treatment of some of the entries here in germany two years ago, i´d never leave a GD-entry unvarnished.

Really it´s not funny to see how the judge-trolls take miniatures of a cavalry command-group and try to transport 4 of them, each on the top of the other, in one hand .... horrible, i´m quite happy this wasn´t my entry.


I use a matte sprayvarnish from Marabu. Usually one or two thin coates with it are enough. Between the two coates i let the former dry so the surface still stays smooth. When the second layer dried i use to paint a thin layer of watered down Valejo matte medium over the miniature. This helps to get rid of the gloss the varnish produces.

The protection for the miniature is good enough for GD and it does not look like beeing varnished :D

Wasnt a formal moan ;) just a bit of light hearted banter :p I have been stupid enough to do a warhammer single... just like another thousand people!

Warhammer single is not the problem this year. 40k single is.

I\'m doing both (40k single is finished but I haven\'t started painting fantasy single yet so it may not get done)

mwagh! you\'re all sissies! you should try it the head-on proper way, no sleep till sunday, redoing my entries form yesterday...mwahahahahahahaha!!!!!

Looks like I have to to an all-nighter on my second entry; a deamon prince.
I varnish my mini\'s with Talens matt spray #115 but this can kill highlights sometimes. However, I want to make sure the static grass I use is stiff enough for drybrushing. A spray varnish is therefor necessary.
Main problem is for me; will the varnish be dry before I go to the UK tomorrow? ???

I also use Marabu and have been realtively happy with the result. But I will try that trick with the watered down Vallejo matte medium:D
