Veining on dragon wing

Kat suggested putting veining on the wings of this dragon:

here is a closeup of the wing:

Got good use of my Windsor Newtons and Vallejos on this one. Painted the veining in with red and purple (arteries and veins, don\'t ya know), then washed over it with the base color so it would look like the blood vessels were under the skin.

Kat suggested this after I commented that I was trying a technique similar to the \"fluffy wolfen\" to give texture to the wings. Basically, strokes of different shades of green, washed with the base tone, to make the wings look more realistic.

This was a real challenge to my brush skills.

And yes, I do see the hair above the ring finger of the wing. Damn cats!:flame:

good idea

Wow, that dragon is great. The bone sections, especially on his belly, are awesome.

I think the idea of veining the wings is good. In other words, you haven\'t done this in vain!:D

Ok, I should be shot for that one. Anyway, I think the veining turned out pretty good, but it may be just a little too stark.

Take a look at your wrist and try and figure out what color the veins you see are. It took me a couple of minutes. I wanted to say they are blue, because I know they are blue. But they aren\'t blue. If they were above the skin they\'d be blue. But what I see is more of a green color. I had to hold it up to something that was blue and something that was green before I could really match it.

On top of that they seem fuzzy. Obscured by my skin an the patterns in it. So I don\'t think the veins should be so stark. You might want to either go over it with another wash, or perhaps even a light drybrushing of green then another wash.

It\'s just a suggestion.

Thanks for the comments

Barkel, that was a real stinker. Real pun-ishment. :|~

I see your point about the veins being very pronounced. But remember something - this isn\'t say, a wrist. It is a wing membrane - and that\'s a very thin skin formation. The veins wouldn\'t look the same as they would on skin that isn\'t streached really taut between two bones, with no muscles or bones underneath. Light would shine through, and make the veins stand out all the more.

Also, get that picture on your screen, and stand back about 20 feet. That\'s about what the wing looks like IRL. As stark as it looks in the blown-up picture, when the drag is sitting on a table top, you just barely register that it is there.

HOWEVER, I will keep it in mind, for the next dragon I do. I\'ve kind of gotten to a point where, good, bad, or ugly, this guy is done. Or as done as I\'m going to do.

Thanks for the input and complements. They are much appreciated.

I know it\'s on a wing but...

I think it could still stand having a thinned wash of the original wing color added on it. My main problem though is that the wings don\'t seem highlighted and shaded enough. Doing that would also help break it up.

Oh well I\'m sure you\'ll be able to \"wing\" it lol

You\'re so vein...I bet you think this thread is about you.....

I like the veining idea quite a bit.

I do think that some of them look \"too straight\" and not...veiny enough.

I do agree with my punny cohorts here that they are too stark. Maybe another thin base coat wash well help them look like they are under translucent skin.

Excellent experiment and great job showing the pic...(even with the odd cat hair thrown in lollollol)

OH! and congrats on the 200 mark. Buy yourself something nice to celebrate!!

Thanks, Vike. Just bought myself some more Vallejos, specific to a friend\'s NMM style. :D
