Hey everyone,

Just posted a new YouTube tutorial. In this 8-minute video, I demonstrate using the "hairspray weathering technique" to achieve realistic looking scratches and battle damage. I also demonstrate painting the blues and whites on this Cygnar Stormwall.

My channel: SchnauzerFaceMinis on YouTube
This video: Painting Warmachine & Hordes: Cygnar Stormwall and Hairspray Weathering Technique

And the finished model looks like this:

Thanks a bunch for watching! I appreciate you guys taking time out of your day to watch my videos.

Should have asked this earlier but does the type of hairspray matter? I know there are quite a few hairspray types.
Also what are you using to mask off the other areas, I can't work out from video what it is.

Cheers!

Good question -- as far as I know, any type of hairspray will work. I used an aerosol can, which is less precise. I've seen people use a pump-action hairspray bottle and actually remove the top and pour the hairspray into an airbrush! That will give you more precision, but then you have an airbrush full of hairspray, which I can't imagine being easy to clean. But I think any kind of hairspray should work?

I am using a combination of painters tape and blu-tack (also known as "poster tack" and "sticky stuff") to mask off other areas. My favorite kind of blu-tack is made by Loctite. It's called "Modelling Putty," but it's really just used to hang pictures and stuff on the walls. It's pretty awesome quality -- adheres well but also removes pretty easily.

Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the info, I had thought about using blu-tack but the stuff I have is crap and does not stick at all well which is bad as it could leave gaps. I will see if I can get some better stuff on Amazon. Painters tape in basket now and will try a small can of hairspray and masking as I don't have an airbrush and if I did I think your right and it would be awful to clean.

Cheers!!

Dpending where you are based, it can also be referred to as 'White Tac' [rather than blu tac] In short, it's less adhesive and therefore won't pull paint off the mini so long as you are careful.

[same reason a lot of housing let contracts stipulate only using white tac on the walls and not blu tac ;p ]

White-tac also has a lot less grease in so is less likely to muck up your paint job.

I'd recommend getting some Tamiya masking tape too - it's yellow and super low tack but high adhesion so shouldn't pull paint off. W&N masking fluid is also pretty useful.

Great technique and video! I'll admit I was surprised that you didn't sprinkle salt on the mini after coating with hairspray. Seems like a common thing people do.

Also, i'ts nice to know we have another troll player ;)
