Hey everybody,

Just posted my Mountain King tutorial on YouTube. This is my favorite model that PP has ever produced -- and that's saying a LOT. I had a great time painting this model, and I hope you find this 12-minute video useful, or at least entertaining.

You can find the video by clicking on the embed, or the direct link below the video.

Here are some shots of the finished model:

The mini is fantastically sculpted, I just don't care for the concept all that much.

However, the video and the painting are really good and fun to watch! Keep it up!

Excellent tut! I asked on Youtube also but what do you thin your VGC with before airbrushing?

Usually I'll use a custom mix, which is 50% distilled water, 40% drying retarder, and 10% liquitex flow aid. The drying retarder helps prevent the paint from drying on the tip of the needle, and the flow aid helps it flow smoothly through the airbrush. I really love this mixture -- it's better suited to my tastes than any other product I've tried.

That video took less than 13 minutes to answer questions I had in mind for years. Great job!

Great video. I shared this with my painting club and here are a few of their comments:

nice video - always impressed by what folks can do with an airbrush.
- Rick

This video may have just sucked me into buying one of these. But I need to finish painting some of the other things on the painting table first...
- Jack

I was really impressed with the air brush as well. In addition, the video itself has an excellent flow, i.e. continuous fast forwarding, paint colors and brands spelled out, some of the arduous parts were clearly skipped so you can get to the meat of the lesson faster.

Thanks a bunch for the kind words and encouragement! I've got another video coming up in a few days. It's another Privateer Press model (Gnarlhorn Satyr) then I'll probably do a Chaos Death Guard terminator (awesome model!)

Thanks for watching, and in case you have a free moment, the Gargantuan is up on CMON in the voting section here:

Okay, that was the kind of answer I searched for (guess the topic at the PP board got a bit sucked under with the crash). I remember that you used a 0.15mm needle with your H&S gun. Did you also strained your VGC paints too and if so, did you do it before or after adding your custom mix?

Cheers...

I immediately subscribed and have since watched all the tutorials on your channel. I really enjoy your commentary style, i actually laughed out loud a few times (especially the comment about the plumbers putty and how the equivalent use of green stuff would cost 900.00). keep up the good work sir, can't wait for the next one!

This model was such a crazy combination of materials (actual Oil Paint?!) that I'm blown away with it (you wouldn't consider doing the Skorne Mammoth, assuming that that drops sometime before the next Ice Age?). Someone on another forum I posted the vid on has accused you of witchcraft.
What is that mixture for snow, if I may ask?
How long have you been using an airbrush, and how rough was it at the start? I've been contemplating getting one for my larger models, but I'm not entirely confident that I'll be able to use it well.

Thanks for the kind words! No witchcraft to report, unfortunately. Just a lot of time dedicated to practicing and painting minis (and a very understanding wife who lets me spend a lot of time practicing painting minis!)

The snow mixture I usually use is WS Water Effects and Army Painter Snow Flock. Use more snow flock for a fluffier snow; use more WE for a slushy, icy look.

I've been using the AB for about a year. There is indeed a learning curve to it, for sure! It's a little frustrating at first to learn about paint consistency and airbrush control, but it's a valuable tool and it's worth the time (and money) investment, in my opinion. I definitely encourage you to get one! You absolutely can use it to great effect -- it just takes a little practice and you'll be a pro in no time!
