View/Vote ratios

I just did a cursory statistical look at my postings and found a potentially interesting thing:

The view to vote ratio - on miniatures I\'ve submitted - ranges from 4.41:1 (on my highest rated miniature) to 2.26:1.
In other words, 4.41 views of that highest rated pic must occur before someone logs a vote. And on the other side - basically every third person who views it votes on it. (If you\'re interested: The median score was 2.67:1 and the mean was 2.77:1 - I have 24 pics posted)

Anyone want to speculate on why there is a difference of nearly 2 points here?

What causes one person to actually log a vote and others to just skip it?

I am a fairly regular user and so first I Sort by Most Recent, All contributors. Then I browse the new stuff. I blow by thumbnails (don\'t view) that are already rated a 6.4-6.5 or under unless the mini is one that I own or something. I always look at 8\'s and above here no matter what the mini category is. I do however frequently skip the vote on these and just close the window to return to the thumbnail listings. I\'m just looking to see what everyone thought an 8 mini looks like

If after all that, I still need more, THEN I go to the random voting thus eschewing the thumbnails altogether.

Then I vote on EVERYTHING that comes up, leaving comments where appropriate.

First of all, good to see your maths is up to scratch

Secondly, as I rarely have enough time these days to look at huge amounts of minis, I tend to do a search each day on recent minis over the score of seven so as to grab a bit of inspiration. On each page I\'ll open 2-4 at once and then try and vote on each and leave a message once in a while.

If I have time I\'ll just open the gallery and swan through, but these bloody forums are grabbing my interest more and more...and it bugs the hell out of me!

I occasionally browse individuals work as well and try and link up with these people to ask questions and pester them. Seems to work!

Well, Flashman14, you\'ve probably \"blown\" by mine! The highest I\'ve gotten was a 6.6, tho I did rate one of my own an 8 at the start. (Due to the perfect score on a local competition level. Here I don\'t stand that kind of a chance!)

Now on the view to vote thing.... I\'ve found that the site logs all views to a particular mini, regardless of if you are viewing your own post or not. And if you have the window open on one of your posts, link to a forum topic, then hit the \"back\" button, you go back to your own post and log another view.

I usually browse the site by company and category, if I\'m not distracted by the forums! I vote when I\'m in a good mood and know I won\'t vote low because I\'ve had a bad day. I like to leave comments when I see something I like, or feel I can offer something constructive.

I try to view every mini and place a vote. So far this has worked out fine. Yep, seen them all, voted on all of them. I\'ll post a comment, when I feel I have something to say.
I hope real life will not interfere with this habit to soon \'lol\'

heh . . . If everyone voted like I described it would have been only this month after a 13 month presence that one of my minis would have been looked at under the Most Recent filter!

But maybe there\'s a corelation between length of membership and higher scores - implying that one learns technique, etc etc by visiting the site! Nobody try and verify this !! There\'s way too many variables that are unqauntifiable!

Flashman14, what companies/mini-lines were the different minis from? Were they different size?

I don\'t field comfortable voting on large scale models, for instance, as I have no experience painting them...

Does other feel like this too ???

For me, it\'s just fire up coolmini and sit back as the random eye- candy/sores drift by with me voting on most. I\'ve assumed there\'s some sort of weighting towards it showing me newer ones but I don\'t know how exactly they are selecting them for me.

I tend to skip the big sculpts and greens/unpainted conversions. I\'m a 25mm mini painter and that\'s what I know. I don\'t think I can compare the paintjob on a 120mm statuette to a 25mm mini. For example, check out a lot of Phillipe\'s stuff (I\'m sure most of you already have). It\'s gorgeous looking stuff but an entirely different scale - I always skip it.

Random newbie behind the mouse!

I\'ve been painting a long time and sort of tooling around the internet for a long time, but somehow I just staggered in here a couple of months ago.:bouncy:
I lurked for a month, absorbed what I could about the whiff of the pot (paint pot) ((mostly)), and then started voting on the types of things I like.

Just today I had switched to \"New Today\" mode and vote as much as possible, and now I\'m commenting more.

Although sometimes I write a post and the server or mySQL database is busy or whacked and that really bugs me. This morning I was trying to reply to Flashman (which is my nik on some other boards) that his comment on my mini had really cracked me up and I couldn\'t get it to take.:flame:

I don\'t see a problem voting on whatever image comes across your monitor. It\'s all taste and expectation, afterall.
Personally, I like to look through the top 100 artists. It\'s looking at this work that gives me the most inspiration.
When I look at anything from the top ten artists, my standards are higher and I grade as such. When I\'m browsing in the 50\'s to the 100\'s, I see a lot of people who are really trying to acheive a new level with their new post.
I do blow by a number of miniatures that I feel are tabletop quality and look harder at the high sevens on up.
In no way do I mean any disrespect to anybody, but viewing an Orc miniature with green slapped on does nothing for me.
Working with numbers everyday, I have noticed that a lot of the scores don\'t add up to the average given. This is very noticable in the 70\'s range.
I\'ve also noticed the quality of a few miniatures that are rating 8\'s and up don\'t have finished bases.
Sorry about the tangent. I think the miniatures that receive the most votes are those from people who have a lot of friends on this sight and those miniatures from the top ten artists on this sight.
Just my humble observations.

Why the numbers don\'t add up....

It\'s my opinion that someone has voted low to deliberately lower ratings. I\'m not going to point fingers because I can\'t prove anything, it\'s just a suspicion. How else do you explain a post dropping from a 7 to a 4.something with only three votes? (Or someone who has a LOT of 8-10 scores in comments having a 6.something average.)

For fun I ran the numbers on some of my minis:

views to comments is probably my favorite as it confirms my theory that folks won\'t comment when they give a low score.
Strangely my best and worst had almost the same view:vote ratio but the mean dropped somewhere in the middle ratings, and their view:comment numbers are way off.

A comparison of comment scores to average score might be interesting too.

As to how I vote, first thing I do is look at the news window and if there are any thumbnails of new or ending auctions that look interesting, I look at them. (this tends to be female figs and scenery)
Next I look at what I can only call the main or index page. It\'s what comes up when I enter www.coolminiornot.com and there are no thumbnails, just one big pic. I vote on it, then on the next, then on the next etc. as they come up. I vote on everything I see until I get tired. Then I close the window, unable to vote on the last pic without a new one coming up.
If I have something to say that hasn\'t already been said, I comment. Looks like I\'ve left about 658 comments so far and voted on 3187. That makes a 4.84:1 views to comments. Or, I comment on one out of every 5 I vote on.

I\'m sure it\'s been proven that some people will give 1s out of whatever personal pettiness they have, but that might not necessarily be the case.
They are a bit hush hush about the actual math used in getting an average score, but I think it discounts some out of sync scores. For example if 80 voters give between 7 and 8 and 1 voter gives a 10 and another voter gives a 1, the 1 and 10 would not be counted in the average because they are aberrations. That\'s my theory anyway. I know it is somewhat touching the truth.

I know that people do post lower and higher ratings to change the score. And it\'s pretty obvious when it happens. But as for myself I\'m looking for inspiration and new technique. I\'m just not likely to get it from a piece with a rating of 5. So, like one of the other posters I only look at the 7 and above, or a 6 if it cathes my eye. I suspect that many people are doing the same thing because the lower rated figures do get fewer people looking at them. And unless it\'s on the absolute bottom of the pile few post comments or offer criticism. After all who needs the help more, the top 10 or the bottom 10?
And yes, I could be helping more, but perhaps this might prod more folks to post more \"how tos\" in the articles section.

vincegamer\'s observation about low scores usually not giving comments is interesting, as the artist would get more out of why you rated their work so low, rather than a bunch of \"brilliant, perfect, amazing\" comments. (not that you shouldn\'t say these things, i think its nice to hear someone appreciates your work. its just more helpful to tell someone how you think they could improve).
as for how i view things, i\'ll check out any interesting auctions that come up, scan through some of the forum topics and read any that interest me, and if i\'m short on time just view the most recent above 7.0 for inspiration, and vote on ones that have fewer than 50 votes. beyond that, individual votes don\'t have much impact, and thats the threshold for a mini counting towards your overall rating. if i have more time, i\'ll actually sort by total votes, and starting at 49 keep voting till i get tired (usually around 47 or so). i usually skip the greens and conversions.

I won\'t pretend to understand what\'s going on when people see a miniature. I have some models that have been around forever, have ~300 votes, and around a 3:1 ratio of views to votes. Then there\'s some new stuff with 6:1 ratios, despite way higher scores.

And to make things even more interesting, my newest post (ID 16562) got like 30 votes the first day, and 4 comments among them. It\'s only had 9 votes on ~100 views since, and no comments

Personally I think that by looking only at the highest rated minis and avoiding the lower ones, people are missing a lot of really fun stuff! Sometimes things get knocked down because of something petty like a brown orc instead of a green one. Or a nice paint job with a crappy base.

Also some of the lower scoring painters really could use the comments and advice. Most of mine hover around a 5.5 to a 6.5, but I\'d still like it if more experienced painters (i.e. Demon winners) would offer critiques. True I paint for tabletop play, but I have the lofty aspiration of taking home a Golden Demon some day.

I\'m not complaining about a 5.5 to 6.5 rating mind you. I\'ve discovered that here it\'s pretty good.

My scores are slightly lower than that. I\'ve only managed to keep one above a 6 for any time. But I\'ve learned so much from the comments I\'ve gotten there that I know my next ones will get better scores. I think the comments/votes issue may have something to do with how you view the site.
