VMC Matt Varnish

So I\'ve tried GW Satin Varnish but felt the models looked dusted after I had sprayed it on. Now I\'ve tried painting on VMC matt varnish on a model and there is no difference at all! Is this because I\'ve painted it on to thin or because the VMC Matt varnish is the best matt varnish out there!?

Anybody else have tried this? And is it better to paint on Varnish rather than spraying it on?

As long as the paint is dry and the varnish is layed thin enough. There should be little differance, although it is easy to ruin spray on primer with atmospheric conditions, not shaking it enough and lots of other reasons.

FWIW that sounds like a spraying issue, rather than a fault in the varnish.

Well if there\'s no difference at all doesn\'t that mean it didn\'t do anything (including making it matt)?

Once it dried it became matt. But still more happy with the paint on approach.

What atmospheric conditions are we talking about? I spray in my basement, about 10-15 degrees celsius down there, pretty dry air I guess. How long should I skahe the can?

I find Testor\'s Dulcote to be the best Matte varnish in either the can or bottle. It\'s much more \"potent\" if you will than Vallejo. Citadel leaves a sort of...haze over the figure, at least it used to before I stopped using it and Vallejo is mediocre, but usable.

I would recommend getting ahold of Testor\'s Dulcote again in ethier the can or bottle variety. The bottle variety can be thinned with water and sprayed through an airbrush as well as brushed on if that\'s your preference. A little goes a long way so pricewise it\'s also the better bargain if you buy in the bottle.

Tip for the bottle though, don\'t screw the lid back on after you open it. Line the top with foil then screw the lid on over that as the dulcote can almost permanently attach the lid to the bottle when it dries.

Regarding paint vs. spraying. I prefer spraying top coats through an airbrush it\'s the best for me. <---for me personally. I also brush it on when it\'s just a small bit I need or in the case of a satin finish for things like leather or stones I will simply apply the varnish with a brush. For full figure sealing such as dulcoting then it is more efficient, precise and faster for me to use the airbrush. Wear a respirator when spraying dulcote though it\'s nasty stuff to be inhaling.

Agree totally about Citadel leaving a haze! For now I\'ll paint on VMC matt varnish, until I get a hold of Testors Dullcoat, as it gives me the best result yet.. Should I thin the Varnish with water? And paint it on in a couple of thin layers?
