Voting and fairness on CMON

Hi folks.

I have recently painted a mini, which I am very proud off, and therefore I kept a close eye on it when it became active... It seemed that people liked it. I had given it a \'9\' myself, but it soon got up to 9.3 with 6 votes, and then it suddenly...dropped. With one vote it dropped from 9.3 to 8.4. That means someone gave it a 3 - I know it is not perfect, but it is better than a \'3\'. You can judge yourself here: http://www.coolminiornot.com/69280

And it\'s not like it\'s the first time ... it seems like a general tendency - someone must really hold a grudge against me ...

how widespread is this problem? what could people\'s motivations for doing this be? is it even significant, given that minis have to reach 50 votes to be active in the ranks?

Hate to bring this to you but \'Sniping\' is pretty common on Cmon! Just search the forums and you will find several topics about it. You will just have to deal with it and take comfort that you are not the only one this has happened to! Even the greats get sniped!

On your mini: It\'s a very nice paint job. If I have to say anything else about it, it would be that I think the skin is a bit yellowish. But maybe that\'s how you intended it to look. As i said, very well done and don\'t let it bother you too much! Keep up the good work!

Wheee ! Sniping topic of the week !

Summary of the matter : sniping exists, is (too) widespread, nothing anyone can do, get over it, comments are more important.

I\'m sure this sounds a bit testy, but it\'s all you need to know ; don\'t bother reading the four pages that will inevitably ensue.

Yes, as Skrit said: don\'t let it bother you. Most votes will be honest. There is also a certain protection against sniping built into the voting system. Once you reach 50 votes, votes that are obviously too low will be deleted.

I agree with U4-Welcome....but read this post before you start first...

I believe Finn put it something like...

We can either have the voting system that reaches the largest audeince available (and put up with a few snipers and miscontents)

Or just have an elite group of folks, patting themselves on the back.

I like alot of what Finn says, but this really struck home....

I can understand that the topic has been discussed before. I am new to the forum, and probably should have sought it out before I complained.

Apparently the phenomenon has already gotten a name \'sniping\'? - well, it\'s a good word for it.

Just think of CMON as an art gallery....but an art gallery where the really bestest of the best in the world also post....

This helps to remove the bitterness caused by the snipers and also adds a sense of realism.

Believe, to get a six on CMON is an achievement, a seven is almost godlike, an eight is virtually unheard of and only evil aliens from the planet \'paint\' get nines and above...

*EDIT* took a look at your mini...very nice... and voted on it twice giving it an average of 8.5, which boils down to \'virtually unheard of\' tending towards \'evil alien\'

Forget about sniping! Your mini is back up to 9.4 after 16 votes! Call it miniature karma, but minis nearly always achieve a level they deserve. There are people out there who like to see themselves as \'levellers\', knocking a mini back to where they think it should be. Your mini will find it\'s true place as the votes stack up, and the effect of some of the t**ts who give out arbitrary scores even out.

FINN ixnay on the vileay onspiracycay... I thought you said you\'d never tell. OK new guy the story is this, the internet is worldwide, yes? Now, you\'ve seen Men in Black- bad show I know, but the concept is sound. The earth IS full of alien visitors that all use various forms of comms- the confusing code of the CMON scoring system is just one of them- don\'t even try to understand my friend- it is meant for those of an alien inteligence. Seems to be a week of discontented voters.
It can get to you, it shouldn\'t but it does, I like to look at the work people do and try to ignore my scores as I said in another thread I know a good mini when I see one as do many other Cmon members so pay it no mind (great comment from someone who went into a sulk and pulled his pics in a temper).

This is part of the reason, I am not posting as much anymore. I must admit I don\'t really take much notice of the scores.

I know what is a good mini, which are worse than mine and which are better.

Some mini are just clever photography to make them look better than they are, but it all goes towards what I think are good minis. The reason i do post is in a vain attempt to get a comment. The problem I see is that If you are not one of the top artists, or one of these boards more illustrious posters, people don\'t seem to comment on your minis as much, this i think is a REAL problem. Forget about the odd Jealous , poster the fact that it is anonymous is why they do it. If you had to register your name with each vote, and there was a vote history link on each mini then I think the problem would dip a little. Of course you will always still get idiots, but that is life.

take CMON as a great and usefull gallery (the most important) on the web...not as a perfect rating system. just take an example, did you see Jacques-Alexandre minis? he\'s totaly under-rating...so this guy is far better than most of the top ten artists...

Maybe we should get a new category on the forums, Whining/Sniping, so that everybody who starts crying about some d*ckh**d sniping them can offload and complain on there, so it doesn\'t pop up in the normal threads..... you could even include a standard comment on the top, like \'sniping is a fact of life, get over it, it\'s not the end of the world\'...lollollollollollol

not dissing your paintjob, it\'s kust you\'re the gazzilionth person to whine about this. i het sniped on a weekly basis, it just means I\'ve arrived at the big league! lollollollollol

Sniping is unfortunately all too common... but you have to say, it does ruin the enjoyment of the site... unless you\'re a sniper of course. Maybe it should be addressed as it\'s definitely becoming more of a problem judging by the number of posts about it.

I figured my last mini - Mid Nor Fire Spitter - had been sniped as it fell 0.6 in about 6 votes but I couldn\'t be arsed to do the maths. Slightly irritating but I don\'t intend to lose sleep over it

One of mine just dropped 0.2 in 1 vote from 9 to 8.8.
Irritates when they don\'t comment.

Somehow I don\'t think my painting is ever going to warrant being sniped. Now if there was an antisniper out there, my posts would be a perfect candidate.

But, I can see how being sniped would suck, but unless someone goes out of there way to snipe your mini every day, the vote really isn\'t going to make all that much difference once you hit 100 votes. If you have a mini that is 9 after 99 votes and someone votes 1, that is going to change the score by 0.08. After 200 votes, the effect is only 0.04. in the long run, it really isn\'t going to make all that much difference.
