Voting on CMON

I\'ve wondered sometimes what to rate miniatures (I know, I know, 5 is tabletop quality, 8 is great job, and 10 is amazing), but still I find that I vote the same for miniatures that clearly have different amounts of skill and effort put into them. I also think that people should take into account huge pictures, clearly showing small errors that normally wouldn\'t be seen in a normal sized photo. Bad photos aside, I have made a chart sharing how I try to vote on miniatures at CMON :

10: Stunning! difficult conversions (I think a ten has to have conversions to show the artist went the extra mile), perfect blending and other techniques, creative, couldn\'t possibly be better.

9: Beautiful! Excellent painting skills, doesn\'t neccesarily have to have conversions, can\'t see anything wrong with it but it is maybe missing something

8: Great Job! Good skills, could improve a tad, but they understand concepts of highlighting and colors that go well together

7: Not too shabby. Looks pretty good, based, complete and well rounded, skills could improve a bit, but the artist has potential

6: Decent. Basic highlighting, not too good on the blending,

5: Tabletop quality. very basic paint job. Fairly neat.

4: Pushing it. Paintjob is getting messy and isn\'t based/well.

3: Bad. Paintjob is pretty bad, messy, not based, looks bad.

2: Really bad. Looks really bad and would look better unpainted.

1: (Cough). Simply aweful. Makes you wonder why someone wasted time to post a picture of it.

I think it was easier for me to write out all ten, just so you know, \"yes, that is clearly a 7\". If anyone thinks differently about rating, please reply.

Well if it has paint on in the right places then its a 5 for me.
Anything else I go with gut instinct and at 18st I have plenty of that

Whoa, by James\' Standard, my minis would probably rank a point higher!

I vote... I don\'t know. I have no system. Usually, I see something and say \"That\'s an eight\" or similar. I don\'t know, I \"feel\" what score the mini deserves.... sounds strange, doesn\'t it?

Not at all strange! I think it\'s hard to have a predefined description for each rating and vote purely along those lines. That\'s why I wasn\'t too sure about the examples that james gave us. I think you have to take many different factors into account when judging a mini, and a set description doesn\'t always fit the bill!

lolI know exactly what mosch is on It\'s the same for me too!Voting is definately an instinctual thing,although I\'ve never given less than a 4,I don\'t think.I give out 10\'s a lot less frequently than I used too now as I\'m still new to this site,but when it\'s an 8,9 or 10 you just get that extra buzz y\'know,you know it\'s something special,something thats right up your alley!!(Don one-Solo mafia)

If the paintwork is neat and tidy and I can see where the painter is going with his work ie trying to improve as a painter/sculptor then I score one way. If the minis are posted incomplete with no description as to what is trying to be achieved or quite obvious that there has been no real effort applied then I vote another.

I agree to everything that james say except of the statement that a 10 needs a conversion. Then cyril\'s plastic spaces marines only deserve a 9?¿?¿?¿ Conversion makes the rating go higher, but IMO its not absolutely necessary

lol Someone touched on this- a rate the forums... based on humor, origionality, appropriate emotion-face use, etc...
E.g./ I rate your forum entry a 9 superduaber... its sooo coul and cute too.

For the origional poster- that is about how I do it too. I\'d rate your post an 8 , mostly because I agree.

Oh, we got rated... Now if I can keep this to myself. If either of my indepentant egos find this it is lible to be enough to separate us again. The both love nines and their heads would swell to the point that we couldn\'t all fit in here again.

I think Sturm was just making light of a tired, boring topic. No one will ever be happy with the voting system. No one will even think that a mini will get the score it deserve,. And the snipers will keep sniping because post like this keep popping up.

Is the voting important? not realy,

Is the score important? not realy,

IMO what is important is the enjoyment that each of us gets by posting our minis and viewing the minis of other painters/sculptors. Also the comments we either recieve or leave for others that give positive and helpful feedback.
I think that this is a wonderful community where the members are all there for each other offering help and advice when and where required and the votes are realy just an accessory.

The actual votes mean shite all really. It\'s nice to get a high rating on a mini, but it\'s not the be all and end all of painting. I think some people lose sight of that sometimes.

Sturm i agree with you and tidoko for the most but i remind you that robius was deleted from all the ranks for a not important thing as votes.
and many people who seems to don\'t care about votes throwed tons of s**t at him.

Don\'t worry about that thing, it\'s not dangerous in anyway. It\'s a special thingy made espacially for forum people to put in their avatar. I actually had one a will ago and only you can see your IP and ISP. And anyways anyone who wants those and who is skilled anogth to do somthing to your computer will get them easily

As for the votes well I think we each have our own little system and that we can only applie general guidlines for newcomers until they get a \'feel\' for it.

I think Robius got a lot of grief because he cheated. That had nothing to do with scores. He had to result to voting for himself and to get noticed.
