voting on older minis

First forum post. I only recently joined CMON and have posted a few minis. I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed in the lack of feedback. I have a lot of older minis and I am practicing my techniques on those before \"graduating\" to newer sculpts. My scores have been on the low end, which is fine as long as I get some constructive criticism, which has been lacking. I also wonder if older minis (Ral Partha, Grenadier, Heritage, etc) simply are scored lower than newer ones in the experience of those who have been on CMON longer. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

I\'ve got quite a few Grenadier in my gallery. Of course they were painted years ago with Testors enamels and a plastic brush, so the scores are understandably low.
SaxonAngel is a painter who also has a lot of older minis, RP stuff mainly. Hers however are gorgeous. Still, they are her lower ranked stuff.

I think older stuff gets rated lower for 2 reasons - first, it is usually just not as well sculpted. The standard of production has increased in the past 20+ years.
Second, old sculpts tend to be less dynamic, and much value is given to a dynamic pose.

You will learn the value of brands if you hang out here long, but you should also learn that the score is not significant. If your personal scores go up, that\'s fantastic. If, over time, they stay the same, that means you are improving - just the voters are getting more demanding.

Anyway, hang out in the forums, put a link to your gallery in your signature line, ask for feedback. These will get you a better impression of the group, and the feedback you get will be constructive.

I agree with Mr. Vince.

We call it \'pimping your wares\'...but don\'t be afraid to ask for opinions here in the forums. There is a regular cast of characters here that almost ALWAYS gives feedback.

Plus, I have noticed the new shiney models almost always seem to score better, regardless of the paintjobs...

Vince pretty much said it all! This site has become so large that many have stopped writing comments on minis (some may not have done so at all, even) and those who do don\'t have time to comment on all minis who are posted. But if you show your stuff here at the forums you will definitely get feedback and you can more easily ask questions and have a dialogue with other painters.

as the folks have said............

Start a thread, post a pic of a mini, ask specific question............asking something specific will more likely result in a good answer..........follow that up with a Work in progress type post, ask advice........you\'ll find yourself improving in no time, I\'m sure.

and yes, older miniatures can get overlooked. I personally feel that the creativity, artistic rendering, anatomy etc are much better than some older examples (also the reverse in true in some cases) and there\'s so many minis being released these days...........so it\'s likely older less inspiring stuff may get bypassed.

for feedback, post here........

Wow! Talk about a rapid response time. Thanks to all of you for the replies and vincegamer for already rating my first mini posted.

I have seen some of the old school minis posted by saxonangel - she is fantastic! Everwill and IG88 also have quite a few older ones. I like them for the nostalgia value - I have some old LOTR Elan Merch figures I picked up on Ebay that have really bizarre proportions, but I still plan to paint them. Also, I personally think the old Julie Guthrie minis look as good if not better than most larger minis produced nowadays.

Welcome to the forums.
I went over to your Gallery
<< treide\'s Gallery >>

I think the scores are a little low but that is becuase of (IMHO)
1. Photos out of focus or contrast too high.
2. The bases that the older minis come on tend to put some people of. I would suggest getting hold of some 20mm or 25mm bases and mounting them on those.

I went thru and voted on your stuff. Keep it up you have the basics down now try more contrasting.

Note that most of her older minis are 80\'s-era Citadel. Back then GW made some great stuff, a lot more good individual models than they do now. She picked the ones she\'s painted carefully, I think. They\'re some of the best. She\'s actually inspired me to start my own small collection of 80\'s GW figures.

Frankly most \"garage\" or smaller company minis from the old days are very bad casts. Even Grenadier made a lot of duds back then - static, poor anatomy, lumpy golem-like faces.

Post your current works in the works in progress forum for comments as you work.
