Voting questions

This is not a \"Why isn\'t the voting system fair?\" or \"How can I improve my score?\" thread. Just something I\'ve noticed and have a few questions about.

1. When I first post a mini here at CMoN, it receives a vote of 6, even though I don\'t select anything on the \"What would you rate this photo?\" section at the bottom. Is 6 the default vote selection?

2. I\'ve seen other minis than only have 1 vote, but it\'s anywhere from 8 to 10; sometimes I agree with that vote, sometimes I don\'t. Is it considered good or bad etiquette to check a higher score when first posting a mini to the gallery?

3. As I was going through the gallery and voting one night, I came across one of my own works. I thought about voting for it, but passed. Two questions: A) Does it count when you vote on your own work? B) Is it considered good or bad etiquette to vote on your own mini, even when you stumble across it?

Vote for your own mini if you wish, and you can put any score you like initially. After 50 votes the scores will settle to what is approx the score it deserves.

Etiquette has nothing to do with it. I use to vote for my own minis now I dont bother. And I believe if you vote multiple times it just registers an average.

1. Yep.

2. Some people actually think that that IS what thier mini should be scored about, they may not be aware of the kind of quality that regulaer users typically see here, or they have an overblown idea of thier own abilities, or (as I think in a lot of cases) they give it a higher initial score to help offset any early sniper votes. I don\'t think it\'s much of a matter of ettiquite when picking a beginning score for your mini as it is a reflection of the attitude who posted it... for example, if I see a mini with an initial score of 10 that really looks like it falls into the 5-6 range, I think the poster either A) has a really inflated ego about his work or B) has an irrational fear of snipers and is trying to offset any low votes. But there\'s no hard and fast rules, it\'s just a matter of personal preference.

3. A) Yes. B) Well, since I\'m currently caught up on voting on all the images here, if I didn\'t vote on my own stuff, they would just keep popping up. (yes, I\'ve voted on over 81,000 minis ). I don\'t think it\'s bad to vote, it\'s your own personal preference and will take you mini out of your voting rotation. So actually, you get to vote twice on your own mini, once when you submit it, which will default to six if you choose nothing, and agian when it appears in your voting rotation. What you pick is entirely up to you, and in the end, it\'s just figured into the average with all the others for your final score.

I hope this helped. I\'ll admit that I try to be as honest as possible when listing it and give my own an initial score of what I think it is (rounded up of course), but I vote 10\'s on it when it pops up in my rotation (I do feel a bit guilty about it.... but it evens out in the end anyway, so it\'s just a guilty pleasure of mine )

@Ogrebane: I figured it would just average out the votes; I just wasn\'t sure if a vote for your own mini counted beyond the very first vote. I used to wonder how people voted a 7.5, but then I figured it out.

@Duende: Voting a 10 on your own mini?? For shame...(j/k lol). I can certainly understand voting to remove them from the rotation and you would probably run into your own work alot while voting for 81,000 minis if you didn\'t.

I\'ve gone through and voted for my own, but I was fair; no 10\'s (or even 8\'s). I know there\'s \"snipers\" out there, but I don\'t vote higher for others because of them, so I won\'t do it with my own.
