W.I.P What did I do wrong?

okay, I haven\'t picked up a brush in almost 2 years, i went through many of the tutorials on this site, to try & refresh myself. then i sat down to stat painting & got this:

Where did I go wrong?

I used Vallejo Game Color Black:
I was trying to ink in the shadows.
I thinned the paint down to 50:1 or more (the eye dropper i use is a bit larger than the drops a Vellejo bottle makes, i used 50 drops)

I mixed the paint/watter very throughly.

it\'s like the pigment stuck to everything BUT the recesses.

Add a drop of dishwashing liquid to the water (roughly one drop per cup of water) that will help break surface tension.

Was the miniature primed? from the pics I\'m not sure if it\'s white or silver I\'m looking at. Having a well primed miniature is the first step for a well painted miniature.

Btw, why post a 860K png when you could post a <100K jpeg instead? ???

yes the mini was primed with spray on primer, specifically it was from a hardware store, primer designed for metal. White The silver look is due to the black covering everythign & bad lighting ( i took less care photographing this than i do finished product usualy)

I get that too, I reckon its to much water, tiny little tide marks everywhere, a pain and a bloody awful mess, I now use Tamiya thinners for a big wash and it\'s preeetty good, might help and it dries a hell of a lot quicker.

I\'d try classic military/train hobby stores, they usually carry a lot Tamiya products.

Another option is a similar product from Vallejo.

Ive had that problem. There are a few reasons but what I do to counter it is after I prime I then paint the mini with a thinned white. Sometimes the surfaces arent primed properly so this helps a bit.

Also before I prime I wash the mini.

I always use dish washing det in water for a wash. I dont ever dilute 50 to 1 maybe 10 to 1 for a wash.

Good luck.

Wow, thanks for all the advice so far guys, as said it\'s been a few years I\'ve never worked with Vallejo before, it was GW when i last painted, and Reaper when i started, I remember having to dilute them a lot more.

I hadn\'t heard about the dish washer liquid thing, thanks a lot for that one :)

I\'ll be heading out tomorrow to try & find some Thinner

as for the PNG, it\'s the perfectionist in me
Jpeg = lossy, even at high compression rates, seeing we are looking for details here I choose a mathematically lossless format, ergo PNG.

One must make compromises, each filetype has it\'s own uses. A picture so big gets \"removed due to hight bandwidth usage\" from ImageShack about 9 times faster than a jpeg that would look 99% like that picture. ;)

I never said it was the smartest choice... just said it was the perfectionist in me. imageshack is supposed to give you approx 100mb per hour per pic of transfer, i didn\'t realize quite how much people would be stopping by. I figured I\'d be lucky to get two or three responses by the end of the week *L* i apparently vastly underestimated the helpfulness & coolness of the CMON population. thank you all again very much guys and/or gals.

Vallejo do a retarder which I use in conjunction with a wet pallette. V useful when thinning for blending or wet layering

For keeping the liquidity better try using a flow enhancer. I got a bottle of Windsor & Newton from my local Hobbycraft. Helps to thin without loss of control where only small dilution is needed

Theeo, do a search here for magic wash - you\'ll find several recipies, but all are looking for the same end result.

With the wash, you would have no need for retarders, but a flow enhancer would help. W&N or Golden make a flow enhancer that you can add to your mixing water. The dishwater soap works too, but you gotta fiddle with it more.

I generally make up about a quart of magic wash at a time, then transfer to an empty dropper bottle as needed.
