War of the ring... Thoughts?

Didn\'t know what forum to put this under, but I am pretty impressed with the War of the Ring (GW) ruleset. I was never a fan of the other strategy battle game as it broke down and didn\'t play well for the big battles I wanted to play, but these rules look very playable.

I\'ve always admired a good chunk of the model range (not all mind, but more than enough of it!) so this is the perfect opportunity to dust off some of my old models and have a game.

Anyone else take a look at the game?

One of the local shops everyone is excited.

I like the concept of the movement tray that holds round based figure\'s. No its not a new concept, but an interesting way to take existing skirmish game troops and using them in a mass combat game.

I was a big lotr game fan when it was first released and for many other releases, but then it started getting silly re-doing rules and prices increases, hardly anyone played after that.

I didn\'t try the original SBG but I\'m very interested in this! Picked up the book and it\'s really, really good, and I\'ve started to paint an Isengard army. It has really re-awoken my interest in the LOTR stuff.

So all it is is warhammer with LOTR minis? I will pass...

It seems like this concept is going around to some other games too. I am pretty sure Privateer Press has created movement trays for rounds bases as well for a similar purpose.

I wouldn\'t really say that\'s totally accurate. I think it plays quite a lot differently than WFB - I find the WFB rules kinda daunting and complicated, whereas these seem nice and streamlined and fast-moving. They also have some differences in terms of who goes first each turn and phase, strategic use of \"Might\" abilities, and other factors.

I really like it, ive had a few games now and it plays very nicely.

Its not what a lot of people thought it would be (LotR warhammer or Apoc for LotR).

What they seem to have done is taken several bits from all the game systems to create it. The movement trays and limited lines of sight from warhammer, the speed of play and turn sequence from 40K (move, shoot, charge). The combined turns, priority, heroic actions and stat system from Lotr SBG as well as the flexability of movement from warmaster. Chucked it all into one game and thrown in some really nice random elements like random charge distances and supped up spells if u roll a 6.

All in all its great fun and easy to learn and its got me painting up 80+ army of the dead for an angmar list which is never a bad thing
