Anyone ever read War with the Newts by Karel Capek? What a bloody good book. I read it a couple of years ago, and that Wapellious frog-thing thatMickc22 (sp?) posted made me think about it.

Clever newts. They take over the world because of mankind\'s ignorance and refusal to acknowledge their equality. Bloody good stuff! Not aliens either - they are earth creatures and very talented.

Sounds interesting. I\'ll see if I can find it. Is it fairly new or has it been out for a while (i.e. can I get it in a used book store or will I have to pay full price

I\'m currently reading an Agatha Christie book, and have two David Weber\'s waiting in the wings so if it takes me awhile to find it that\'s o.k.

It\'s an old book. Maybe pre-WW2. Not sure...a muddy marvel it is though

There is a newt that comes and sits on my patio every night after dark, just outside of the light from the sitting room. The nearest pond is 3 gardens away. If I shine a torch on it it just \"plays dead\" completely motionelss apart from the occasional blink of the eye.

That, is none other than NEWT GINGRICH. Why a grown man is named after a lizard, I\'ll never know.
He is a former \'Speaker of the House\' of Representatives during the early 90\'s
Very right wing conservative. He once penned what was called the \"Contract with America\" (which some called \"contract ON America) and ushered in the conservative movement back into American Politics.
I think now other than a prolific author, he is some sort of professor in Georgia.
I really don\'t know all that much about politics, but egads, he is named after a freaking frog, he\'s got to have issues!!lol

\"War of the Newts\" is an incredible book -- for everyone who said they\'d think about getting it, I highly recommend you run out and do so sooner rather than later. I was first introduced to it about 10 years ago in college, in a class was taking on sci-fi (I was a lit major), and loved it from the first time I read it. But just a year and a half ago, I my car got wrecked and I had to spend about 8 months or so getting around L.A., to and from and everywhere else by bus; I took the opportunity to catch up on some baklogged reading, and re-reading \"War of the Newts\" was one of the first things I did; it\'s that good.

It\'s both. It\'s about our smug superiority and refusal to recognise ourselves as anything other than the pinnacle of evolution/creation of whatever. Also our treatment of other creatures. And our refusal to blame ourselves. Tim, I\'ll push it your way - it\'s a damn good read.

sounds good. kinda reminds me of the tom holt book \'falling sideways\' where the main character learns that god is actually a super frog from another planet. or something like that. it changes every ten pages. mad

Hell, every time I look at Rev\'s .sig, I think about needing to read Lucky Jim again. I only ever read it once, in high school -- putting it about 15 or so years ago -- and to be honest, I wouldn\'t even really be able to describe it anymore, even. I just remember the particular class because I\'ll always remember that teacher, so I can still recall how much I enjoyed the book at the time.

I\'m on another Amis book now called Take a Girl Like You. He\'s a bloody marvellous author. Lucky Jim was subtly funny and sexy. He got more sex-oriented the older he became
Read The Old Devils the other month and The Alteration about a page boy who had a brilliant voice and the Catholic Church wanted to castrate the poor kid to keep his voice perfect. You see, in the book The Reformation never happened and I think Luther was a pope. The current pope in the novel is a Yorkshireman and it\'s bloody hilarious lol
One of the funniest authors ever...
