Warhammer 40K MMO in 2012

from gamasutra:

Gamespot is reporting that THQ, the well known game publisher, is planning to release the much-talked about Warhammer 40K MMO in 2012.

This information, it would seem, was gleaned from a single slide during an investor\'s presentation in February where they listed expected fiscal 2012 releases (fiscal year runs from April 2011 to march 2012).

The Warhammer 40K MMO is being developed by a cmpany called Vigil Games. The only game listed for the company on their website is an upcoming RPG called Darksiders. In their description of Warhammer 40K, all they say is:

\"Warhammer 40,000 is one of the most eagerly anticipated MMOs on the horizon. As long time fans of Warhammer 40,000, we\'re pulling out all the stops to deliver a game that will plunge players deep into this incredibly rich universe.

We’ll be announcing more about the game in the months to come, so stay tuned.\"

Knowing the high standards for their franchise and the diligence with which games Workshop has protected the IP with Mythic\'s Warhammer Online, it will be interesting to see how Vigil handles the game.

I\'ve grown away from playing the TT game.
But since I\'ve kept up to date with Dawn of War (even DoW:II) I\'ll most likely be getting into this one too.

How exactly will that work? The 40k universe is one of rigid hierarchies and total obedience to powerful entities. MMO tends to rely on ad-hoc teamwork and individualism is all the fun...

/does remember the concept of \"Rogue Trader\" though

They were able to make a Sucessful Pen and Paper RPG out of the Warhammer Universe with a second one coming soon. I don\'t see why that wouldn\'t translate to an online game.

It will work amazingly well if it reminds the Inquisitor, precisely because and Inquisitor band is an ad-hoc team that can either operate independently of form and ad-hoc alliance.

Unfortunately, after the latest Warhammer online I don\'t expect much.

i hate to be the bad news bear, but this news bit is 2 years old.

THQ is the distributor for all WH games, but not always the developer. Warhammer Online was developed by Mythic Entertainment (makers for the cult favorite Dark Age of Camelot, The legendary Ultima Online, and RvR pioneers). While WAR is a mixed bag i think we can all agree could\'ve used another 6months to a year of tuning, Mythic will not be at the helm of the limbo\'d 40k MMO. That job is relegated to Vigil Games in Texas.

There entirety of Vigil\'s data on the MMO can be found here: http://www.vigilgames.com/games_40k.php

2012 sounds like a reasonable date, but between EA\'s current dedication of laying off every member of Mythic in our current \'economic crisis\' as well as WAR\'s lackluster staying power, I wouldn\'t hold my breath.

Shame too, WAR was my last hurrah in the MMO world (I just cant dedicate time like that anymore) but the 40k one would\'ve brought me back.

As far as SciFi (or rather, SyFy apparently) MMOs go, they do not get the massive subscription rates that Fantasy MMOs do, but looking at Anarchy Online, EVE Online, etc, there is a large cult following, enough to keep them updated and expansions coming out.

As far as 40k video games that dont have the word \"Dawn\" in the title, I\'d like to see this come out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbjbbzOrCIg although it reminds me of a combination of Gears of War and the bland Conan X360 game.

Aye it\'s old news that a 40K mmo is in the works, the new news was that it\'s due in 2012.

What suprises me is how many people on here are really bashing WAR. When the game came out and for at least a couple months after everyone had only good things to say about it. Personally I wasn\'t a big fan but it seemed like everyone else still was.

re: Sci-Fi MMOs my favourite MMO of all time was Sci-Fi and so was my second favourite, and both got cancelled due to not enough interest. I was in love with AutoAssault and would still be playing it if I could. Tabula Rasa I was really enjoying too, though I hadn\'t gotten very far when they announced it was done. Eve is a great concept but they need to do something for the non-hardcore player and for the new player, it was way too much learning to keep my interest. If you can\'t figure out what to do in the game during a 15 day trial there is a problem. I tried Anarchy but couldn\'t get past the dated graphics.

I can attest to being one of the ones who was very excited about WAR when it first came out. I think the general attraction was the fact that it was set in the Warhammer world, but after playing it for a bit it became apparent how bland the game was with little else to do but run around and kill things.

I am not a big fan of the Sci-Fi genre in general, but my favorite MMO of all time was Star Wars Galaxies before SOE decided to destroy it. So I would definitely give a 40k MMO a chance if it had the features I would like to see in a well balanced MMO. (Primary being a well developed crafting system and player housing.) If it\'s going to be just another smash and bash game then I won\'t bother.

2012 would be nice, but I\'m gonna have to see a lot more news feeds on it, one 3rd of a sentence wont convince me of it ever seeing light. Hell, \'Demonik\' had a whole MOVIE about it get released, and the game got cancelled.

how can an MMo work when guns are involved? spend years building up a character and *boom* it gone wit one shot???

or theyll do it so guns do no damage whatsoever making the whole franchise worthless to me
