welcome loudoggman, you should check out http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/forums/list.page
they have a fantasy list section and just about all of your gaming questions can be answered there. I will share some advice though, pick an army that you like the look of because you will be painting lots of figures so you better love your armys look and color scheme a lot.

You can always look at GW's online store under "armies". It has pictures and brief descriptions of all the units.

Welcome on board!

Not wanting to rain on your parade, but are you sure you want to start WH? Imho the conduct of GW has been less then... amicable in the past (bad QC, annual price hikes, bullying of competitors etc).
If it really floats your boat, go for it (I have a huge HE army that I still love to paint), but at least take a moments time to consider the growing alternatives out there before dropping several hundred bucks.

As for army choice, it really depends whether you are more a gamer or a painter. I myself would always choose my army depending on visual style. Rules may change, but nothing can change the look of miniatures you have allready aquired.

I gotcha, well im still new so i dont know much about it so i appreciate the insight. That being said, what else can you suggest that offers high quality minis?

Back on the warhammer side of the house, is there a list out there of oop units as well? things that arent made anymore?

if you want high quality and a growing in popularity game check out warmachine/hordes by privateer press. http://privateerpress.com/
it will cost less and you will get into games much sooner since less to paint.
Where are you from? what is being played at the stores near you?

Well, whichever Army you decide, just remember they'll be a whole new Army with new units, books, models, and other must have items out before you finish the one you're on.

It's the GW Merry-go-round.

It depends on what kind of game you would like, especially the scale (big armies or scirmishes) and the style (fantasy, steampunk, SF?).
Personally I`m very fond of "Freebooters Fate" (priate setting, think "Monkey Island"). Its a small skirmish system with high replay value and beautiful Minis by Werner Klocke.
another great but rather complex game with high quality Minis is "Infinity" (SF).

If you choose GW (even if I don`t like their games anymore, it is still easier to find opponents for their systems than for those of smaller companys), make sure you take a look at Ebay. You can sometimes get whole armies for a fraction of the original price.

I`m sure whatever way you choose, you will alwasy find further help here. Its a great comunity :)

I am from VA and I really dont know what's being played. I kindof got in to liking warhammer on my own through the web. I guess you could say right now im viewing it from a collector pov. It does look cool to play (minis in general) but i have no friends that are into this kind of thing, so im on my own pretty much.

If you aren't playing, just buy what looks cool, no need to get an army. Especially not one that can be used in a game.

If you do want to play...or just head in that general direction for now to keep your options open: Try doing a google search for "<hometown name> gaming group" or "hometown miniature community" or something like that. Most cities have multiple blogs and forums where the local folks arrange games and such, some even have painting groups, not as common to have a separate forum, but sometimes there is. You can also try looking around at the local gaming stores, especially if they host games, have game tables, they'll probably have a notice board, where the local groups will post a flyer. Not so much at the GW stores, but the other "independent" type shops that cater to a wider audience. No guarantees, but those are a couple ways to find out what is going on in your area. You can also get an idea of what kind of people they are from how they act online, give you an idea if you want to get active in the "gaming" side of things.

I appreciate all of the advice. I guess if I get to that point of actually wanting to play then i will just have to make that trek into the other realm of nerdness, lol.

I was in a very similar boat louddoggman21.

I don't have any friends that are into this sort of thing, but that didn't stop me from collecting tons of armies. I was big into Wood Elves for a while. I've had probably 5-6 different Armies. Undead/Vampire Counts, Orcs, Beastmen, Ogres, Empire, Lizardman, Dark Elves, High Elves....But since then I've found much more happiness in building little skirmish squads.

I now like to build up forces based on whatever thing I'm into at the moment. For instance, I've got a nice Zombie Horde and Hunters. Some cool Weird War 2 elements, Some Sci Fi goodies, and my latest is Batman: Arkham City.

I guess the moral of the story is don't limit yourself to just GW or PP. I find their 'fluff' restrictive and imagination killing.

I was in the same boat too. None of my old friends are into this, but i made lots of new friends through gaming at the couple of stores near me. The people in this hobby are very receptive to new people wanting to join up, so dont be afraid to check out a night when mini gaming is going on. Just walk up to some of the guys playing and start a conversation about the game and say your interested in getting started. Granted not all the gamers are into the painting but it is a start.

Also since you are into the painting side check out http://www.atlantafigures.com/index.htm they have a show this weekend might be a little late for you to drive down.
There is a D.C. show in early Sept every year http://ncmss.org/
And if you want to drive more north there is http://www.mfcashow.com/ in P.A. in early may

If you want to play Warhammer with friends or in a non official GW hobby shop, you have always this option.
Stay to the basic rulebook and the army book of the army you want to play and fill it with miniatures from several other, various companies and just fill in some GW miniatures, which either are unique or you like. This is a much cheaper way to enjoy the game, while many non GW miniatures are much better sculpted.

You can almost create whole armies of Wood Elves, High Elves, Dark Elves, Vamire Counts, Warriors of Chaos, Dwarves, even Empire up to a point.

If you are going down the route of collector, rather than gamer I would heartily suggest you get into Ebay ( assuming you're not already). It is probably the best source of getting really cheap older minis - especially GW stuff as there is so much of it about. You can normally pick up some newer stuff at a discounted rate to what you will pay in store.

If you are looking at all metal minis then don't be put off if they are already painted. There are plenty of ways to strip the paint off so that you can start again from a clean base. In some cases the cheapest minis on Ebay are those that are painted really badly. Revel in the cheapness as you dunk it in paint stripper and effectively get a new mini for a fraction of the RRP.
There are also paint strippers that work on plastics and resins, but ask on here first to make sure it doesn't have any adverse effects. Peeps on here have tried most stuff so we can let you know what works and what will turn your plastic/resin into a lump of goo.
