Warhammer online development cancelled

I am very upset. I just went to the warhammeronline website, a game which I have been tracking it\'s development for over a two years now, has just been cancelled. It doesn\'t even make any sense to me because they were very close to the open beta test for it, and now they go ahead and cancel it without even giving it a chance? Needless to say, I am very pissed off over this.:mad::mad:

thats unbelivable...

How can they do that so far into development!

I had been following that as game as well.

Talk about having the rug pulled out from underneath you.lol

Well...

I suppose it\'s their ball. They can pick it up and take it home anytime they like....

Doesn\'t win them any friends though and I think that is what they probably need most right now given the strength of the opposition

I always thought the game looked pretty weak. They probably looked at the crowd of upcoming competition (WoW, EQ2 etc) and elected to cut their losses rather than risk the costs of setting up servers and infrastructure etc.

Actually I\'m pretty sure it was because they had already spent 5 years in development and then had another half year to full year to go, and then there is the cost of running an online server, especially for a game, in addition to the upkeep and so forth that they just decided they couldn\'t afford it. Still, really f***ing dissapointing. :bouncy::flip:

It\'ll be a case of the develpoment costs getting beyond the initial projections of financial recoup.
Any project that has such high development outlay needs to get prior sales or investment in order to cover the continuation cost.

Given that Warhammer online was aimed at the serious online community was there enough \"signup and interest\"? I doubt it.
Consider that it wouldn\'t be putting a large impact back into the core business (selling toy soldiers) then there is your rationale.

Yeah, that\'s what I was thinking. But with 5 years of costs already put into it, wouldn\'t it make sense to rush release it in hopes to get some of the money already spent back? They were already in closed beta and have a working game engine, so I don\'t imagine that would be a huge problem. Oh well, stupid mooks.:flip::bouncy:

take what they have....

I am not to much into \"online gaming\" anyhow, but what if they just took what they had and turned it into a single person CRPG? That way they could at least publish it and get some money back.

Oh well, as long as they don\'t \"f\" with the Warhammer 40k game....

I\'ve done some digging and searching and finally found what is most likely the answer. Voila.

If what is said their is true, then (despite how evil they are ;)) I truly feel sorry for GW, not to mention the video game market.

Crikey!!

What a shame. I was looking forward to it\'s release and was hoping to get involved with the open beta. I usually have a dabble with mmorpg\'s and I thought this one looked quite promising. However, as Jarrett pointed out, there are some other good games on the horizon... especially WoW... Dragon Empires looks quite good too. There is also the existing competition... like Dark Age of Camelot, which I play.... it would need to be seriously good to drag people into playing.

warhammer battles?

There was some mention in that article that Wymling X linked to about Warhammer Battles.

Anyone have an idea what that may be?

(Of course I have to make a crack): I think GW finally saw Blizzard\'s World of Warcraft and went running home, not wanting to go against such tough competition..

I.....whoah.....maybe I\'m a little niave, but I didn\'t think that kind of thing would go on at a major software company. I mean, dragging people off the street to fill seats. All those who say Gw are evil, take note, there\'s always a bigger fish

But that sounds like the biggest load of old bollocks I have heard in a long time.
If it isn\'t, then the project deserved to fail if the so-called \'Executive Producer\' shows such a poor grasp of the English language and almost complete ignorance of the laws of libel.
From what I have read here...I would not let that bloke walk my dog...

As I said, if what he said was true. ;) I too feel it was the pressure that ended the show. Just look at WoW. Incredible, something that GW can\'t really compete with. They just don\'t have the fanbase, or the tech.

But what if it\'s true...? This kind of thing would make me worried if it were really what happened. I\'m beginning the first of 5 years of education leading toward a game development job. If this kind of thing actually does happen, how much harder will it be to get a game to a publisher? Ah, well - time will tell.
