Warhammer pronunciation question

So, IPM and I have a disagreement...
She\'s working on some screamers of Tzeentch. She says it\'s spoken as \"tez-nek\", I say it\'s \"zeen-tek\". Are either of us correct?

All the WH gamers I\'ve ever known have pronounced it \"zeench\", single-syllable. One backed this up, even, as being a corruption of the pronunciation of \"change.\"

The \"Tz\" would be a single sound, similar to Tsar/Czar, and many, many one-syllable words end in -nch or -tch as single sounds, so combining them to -ntch isn\'t that far-fetched.

Two syllables rather than one... 6 distinct sounds (ok, 5 if you only count the doubled-up short \"e\" only once) rather than 4... some people have a strange definition of \"easier.\"

Great, now I can hear Becca in my mind, running around pronouncing \"czar\" as \"kuh-zar\" and \"bench\" as \"beh-nek\"... That, and picturing Snoop Dogg flashing gang signs while saying, \"Teznek, mah nizzle!\"

Also, I know that many of the people on these boards -- myself included -- don\'t actually play the Warhammer games, even if they might paint the figs. So for those who don\'t already know, Tzeentch is the Chaos God of Change in the game... hence the theory of my friend (a Tzeentch devotee) as to the \"change\" pronunciation corruption.

There is no \'correct\' pronunciation..as the word is made up.

Received wisdom over the years though agrees with Sturmie:

\'T zeentch\'

...as in that crap 80\'s band led by the borderline boiler, T\' Pau

Sorry Becca, I have never even heard of anyone attempting the pronunciation \'Tez Nek\'???

Hey Becca! There is no right or wrong...

It\'s a made-up word so you can pronounce it however you like.

You could be right and everyone else wrong...no way to tell, so stick by your guns gal

Way back when I owned a store (before GW moved in) they had a pronunciation guide so we \"knew what we were doing\".

It sounds like Zeentch. The first part starts with Z, rhymes with seen and ends like lynch or synch.

I had a kid in the store once tell me it was pronounced Zen-Tech and his dad told him because his dad is a linguist.... So I showed him th guide, then the door.


The real question is: what the hell is that pink thing on all of Fizl\'s posts. It shows her belly, two Guinness then?????

Some of us need to know.

hes got it right there..... as for the pink at the end..... its a fat chick in a corsage some guy posted here from a porno site a lil while back... basicly drink beer get fat lol

Correct, its \"zeench.\"

I can confirm this as I\'ve heard Gav Thorpe amongst others pronounce it at Games Days.

God, I\'ve heard all manner of pronunciations for this one, including Becca\'s \"Tez-neck\" (from someone else, no less!). I\'ve always said it \"Zeench\" or maybe with a sort of half-syllable t-ZEEnch--and it seems I\'m right, if that\'s how the mighty GW pronounces it.
