Warhammer vehicle scale

Cake or Death?
So I put the new 40k Valkyrie together last night for a local store tourney, and my roommate wanted to see how many models would really fit into it. We managed, with the heavy bolter sponsons popped out the doors, 4 cadians or 5 ratlings. We don\'t really have a problem with this, but found it amusing as the Valkyrie is supposed to hold 12 human-sized models.

Does anyone know why 40k vehicles are a smaller scale than the infantry figs? Is it tradition, a game-play issue, or something more arcane?

Oh, and yes. The new Valkyrie is *sweet*.

practicality and cost. for instance, a rhino would ned to be enormous to fit ten sm models in, it would be so itd look outta place considering marine model are as tall as guardsemne. theyd also take u lots of space on the table to boot

why are sm\'s the same size as ig, when they are supposed to be at least 2 feet taller?! don\'t get me started!
edit - and yeah the valkyrie is pretty damn good (one of the better vfm minis they do imo)

There\'s no real scale consistency in the 40k world. Weapons, vehicles, buildings, heads and hands to height...it\'s all wonky. Also you never know what the makers were referencing when they make things.

Vehicles, for example, might fit more if you don\'t use bases on the \"occupant\" models, use the seats and standing room as much as possible, etc. \"Real\" humans/orks/eldar would be able to reposition themselves much more than a plastic/metal figure. Packing in more like sardines more efficiently.

Ive heard similar complaints (?) about the ork trukk too.

But im thinking, minis a) have bases b) usually are dynamically posed, both these factors increase space required :p

Try 12 guardsmen without bases & standing upright lol

A similarly scaled vehicle to hold 12 troops would be about the size of a Baneblade.
In relation to my gaming table question in the WH40K threads, I believe table space, or lack of might be the answer.

Having said that the FW Gorgon does actually hold exactly as many men as it\'s supposed to.

The Gorgon don\'t count, the minis you stick in the Gorgon are on a straight line, no bases and they are standing straight up and down, try to fit the transport capacity with regular guards on bases and you have a problem..

cant agree more.
take the m113 apc for example
2 crew
11 troops and not much bigger than a station wagon (shorter but wider than mine actually, I just measured)
comfort is not a consideration.
also I think GW have \"justified\" scale discrepencies in space marines in the past by passing it of to the chapter gene seed having different effects on different marines.

I think that your attitude to this is the problem, (in the case of the gorgon) not the model.
as you\'ve said, the model does fit It\'s quota of models, as they would be when transported in a huge armoured personel carrier.
do you really expect everyone to design vehicle for people with massive 3 foot manhole covers glued around their feet (and god forbid any bases should actually overlap!) who are doing crazy things like running or shooting in the middle of their transport!

Very much this, given the amount of kit the average soldier has on him to boot. Tis all very feasable indeed!

I liked Undaves explaination better though lol

The vehicles are in scale, or even a bit bigger than they should be, its the troops that are badly miss-scaled, the so called \'Heroic scale\'. They are basically too chunky.

No military vehicle is built for comfort.

Scale Creep is part of the issue, but after having spent years dealing with WWII vehicles, and more recently around modern vehicles, I\'m here to tell you TBS has it right - most of the time its a case of too much shyte and not enough room.lol

Just saying, regular marines dont fit in there rhino because they have dynamic poses and are on bases. If you took the bases of and gave them poses like they were being transported, like the guardsmen you can buy from FW that fits in the gorgon, the space marines might fit in there rhino.. So you cannot state that the Gorgon can hold all its troops the rhino cant, when the troops you stick in the Gorgon where made just to stick in the Gorgon! There are no FW space marines made specially to fit in the Rhino!!

Would you really be willing to spendat least £10-15 in 10 marines in boring poses that would never be seen considering that the roof and doors would most likely be closed. For the gorgon it has such a huge open space to carry troops that it would look silly and boring if was left open so it make sense.

No of course not, you´re right, it makes sense.. But thats still the only reason that you can fit all those men in the gorgon.. You could do it with the rhino to but it does not make any sense, just as you said.. So I guess we agree :p
