Warmachine... Any good?

I was thinking of start-up with Warmachine, but before spending a small fortune on the mini\'s, i was wondering if those of you who have played it could give me your views on the game.

Much appreciated :)

The starter boxes are forty bucks a pop and all you need to get started. I wouldn\'t call that a small fortune. It is however a very enjoyable game, if that helps your decision any.

I am not a big fan of mini gaming. I usually only get involved with the painting.
I did however play a game of Warmachine and I am hooked!
The play is as fast or as slow as you want it, and armies can be as big or as little as you want.

A simple starter set is all you really need to play, and there are enough different armies with different playing strentghs and weaknesses to keep you going.
Heck, even the mercenary figures can field their own small and deadly army.
Now some of the figures leave a little to be desired as far as putting them together.
(Actually some of them leave ALOT)
But it is definitely a great game that is a heck of a lot cheaper than most of the other mini games out there.
Check out their website if you want some more info

I can\'t comment on the game as I am a non-player...

But the minis are very good IMO. I have bought all the Khador and mercenary ones and have no complaints:flip:

(Having said that, I don\'t flinch at having to employ a bit of GS)

Well I am biased as I am a Press Ganger (equivelent to an Outrider) and I must say I love this game. I sold off my beutifuly painted Space Wolves along with some other stuff so i can devote my time to this game. i have 4 of the 5 armies and i still have not even come close to the cash i put in 1 40k army.
it take the best elements of Mage Knight and 40k. The figs are 90% beautiful. (not all are gems). I recomend picking a faction you like and go from there.

Thanks Guys :)

Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated.
When I talk about a small fortune, I am of course thinking ahead to the likely outcome that I WILL end up buying loads of stuff for it, but you are right, the starter sets do offer a great jump on point, and the mini\'s do look great.
I think i can feel a purchase coming on :)

I think it will cost me a small fortune to... But then again, as always I want it special and extra hard...
I\'m not going to buy a standard army boxed set... my jacks will all be blister-bought...
I\'m going to collect Khador (Don\'t you just love Russians, especially the widowmaker babushka!)
What I\'ll buy is:
3 Marauder heavy warjacks
The Butcher
Box of Widowmakers :]
Box of Iron Fang Pikemen
That should give me about 500 points to play with... and should cost me about 125 euros...
When I\'ve bought all that, and my bankaccount doesn\'t hate me anymore, I think I\'ll buy me Doomreavers (superb models, except the leader who\'s plain ugly) and of course, how could I not (with such a name), the Solo Manhunter :D
I don\'t think I\'ll take my warband further than 1000 points though...
To get to 1000 points I\'ll need to buy 2 more Marauders and a new warcaster (probably Prince Vladimir)...

I play Khador as well and I can tell you that The Mauraders are \"OK\". but your really hurting yourself if you have no ranged weapons (beyond the widowmakers). Khador is the slowest moving army and have the lowest to-hit ratio, but when they do hit the results are spectacular. Most other players know this however and will exploit the slow movement of your Khador Army. In all honesty, I would go with a couple of Destroyers instead. This will give you a bombarding ranged weapon that will help you weed out some of the enemy while you march up to them. This is especially important with Haley in Cygnar. There is nothing worse than having your already slow movement halved, and having nothing but melee figures. They will tear you up with missles while you stagger in. and once your close to having melee, they move away and the whole process starts over again.
At least go with one Destroyer or your really gonna regret it.
And if you HAVE to go melee, the Critical freeze and grappling power of the Juggarnaught is a much better choice. While the Maurader can do alot of damage with one hit, the Juggarnaught can tie up other warjacks quite nicely and his damage is not all that lower.
Ohh and the power of the Man-o-War is nothing to sneeze at either. As Khador has no light Warjack, the Man-o-War is the closest thing your gonna have.
And as a parting shot, rethink your idea of 3 Warjacks with the Butcher.
With only 6 focus, the butcher really has issues controlling more than 2.
My army:

Sorscha (Fog of War is essential to moving up on the enemy and I like the idea of freezing the enemy in its tracks)
2 Destroyers
Widowmakers
A squad of Man-O-Wars to protect Sorcha
The Mage Hunter Eyrous (sp?) (Those disrupter bolts are devestating toan opponent and she compliments the widowmakers well.)

Spent some money

Well i went out for lunch and came back with my first WM mini... Iron Lich, Asphyxious.
Got this just because it is a cool mini, I still expect to go for Khador...but cygnar looks ok too... but then so does cryx and the protectorate.... oh d@mn how am i going to decide ???

warmachine completely rocks. but you should play the protectorate of menoth if you don\'t want to get incinerated. :D

Don\'t intend to play...

But it took me forever to get a Sorscha without shelling out $40 for the set.

She came with the 2 warjacks already painted, so I\'ll recoup the investment off of those.

I do have to say I like the Khador look much better.

Oh, I\'ve done it now!

I\'ve gone and bought Warmachine Prime rulebook.
Good value and looks to be well presented.

Now I just need to decide which faction(s) to buy...
I am inspired by all the recent WM Miniatures posted on this site.

Then you\'ll probably like the satyr/demon mixed women with whips called the Satyxis(?) I believe.

Really cool. Slightly off on the sculpting of some of them, but nice idea.

Be warned however, they are a pain in the A$$ to put together.
Can someone tell me why the teeny tiny horns had to be molded seperately on this one but not on Skarr? And Why does the damn arm not meet both the premolded hand on the whip and the figures shoulder?
Good looking but not minis for the GS uninitaiated to be sure!

lurch i gotta say i agree with you. i think PP makes models for the modelers. which puts the less inclined at a bad place.

but seriously they are truly great minis once you do them justice.

there are definatly faction favourites when it comes to paiting though. the khador are really easy to get looking like a million bucks. but hte cryx are kinda hard to paint \"bling\"

menoth are just awsome in their scope for painting. clean, dirty, evil, good.. all the same, just dripping with potential.

duckula the game is the best i\'ve played in wargame style armies. if you find opponents you are set. thats the only thing that stands in the way of my unreserved recommendation, and people are taking to it like ducks to vegies so i don\'t think there is any problems there.

the box set looks awsome when painted and gets you all you need to start (carefull though, like any game it gets more expensive on your commitment.)

get in the water duck! how else can you tell what it\'s like?

The main book is cheap like borscht too- and super well done. Not to mention the minis. Heck you don\'t even need the main book(prime)- there are rules in each pack of minis and free on the site.

I\'d go for Warmachine. Anyway, the frozenport will be open soon, I\'ve been promised some goodies today so it could be open after the weekend.
When you\'re free check us out at www.frozenport.co.uk
I\'m waiting on someone to send me something and then things will happen. Until then there\'s a little spoiler on there to give you some kind of idea what\'s happening.

WM is a great fun game, it\'s got a deep enough curve to keep you interested and to think up new tactics but it\'s also quite easy to get into once you\'ve got the hang of the basics.
The use of focus points is what makes it strategic. Do you boost your accuracy or save it for damage or go for an extra attack? It means that even with small armys you\'ll get a different game each time.
