Washing Your Car

Hello I\'m 16 and I got my first car 3 days ago and i just washed it by hand for the first time and I have a question for all the hand washing car owners out there....any of you have any tips? I didn\'t do that good of a job and I think it was my style of washing it that made it bad.

Lucky little git. It\'s kids like you that make people hate their parents. lol I bought my first car when I was 22... mind you, I\'d been legally pissed countless times between 22 and 18.

I think I did the wash-by-hand thing once. Need to have the right wax, the right soap, the right cloth, the right bucket, the right water and the right time of day. That\'s far too much like effort for me. These days, my car gets valetted when it goes in for its service. :D It can take a long time to wash a car thoroughly, even just on the outside. Had I tried it with the 4x4 I had, it would have been over an hour\'s worth of climbing and sloshing.

However, if you insist on washing your car by hand, make an event of it. Invite your mates and gf\'s and bf\'s around for an afternoon of car washing, everybody works on everybody\'s cars. Just make sure there are girls with white t-shirts and loads of fun will be had by all.

Use a sponge and a soft brush...warm water and good soap...really scrub the areas that pick up the most dirt....rinse often...

Then use a chamios to dry it thoroughly...that will prevent the \'spots\'.

That is easily an entire afternoon worth of work....much easier to take it to the 8 dollar drive through....

Waxing it and buffing it is a lot more work, but it helps the car look newer..and cleaner.

When doing the inside, be especially sure to vacuum under the seats.
Get all those food bits you spill.

Use a new sponge every time.
And make sure to get behind your ears..

Oh, wait... the ears aren\'t on the car.
I\'m getting confused.

Couple of tips I\'ve picked up.

1. Don\'t use washing up liquid/dish soap in the water as it contains salt and can lead to rusting
2. When rinsing, start from the top or you\'ll have to do the lower parts twice
3. Only wash the car if you really need to and no-one else is gonna do it (much easier to leave it dirty and say you\'re conserving the worlds water supplies)

However, the only true way to wash a car involves not less than six ladies and not more than 3 complete bikinis - lather, rinse, repeat ;)

I agree with supervike.
I hand-washed my first car and it took all day to do it right.
Hand-washing takes about 8 \"man-hours\" which is why the machines and the 8 guys at the car wash can get me out of there in 15-20 minutes.

Find someone who has a mercedes or BMW and ask them where they get their car washed. Odds are they go somewhere that takes good care of the car and washes gently.

for a real nice finish buy some clay sticks. rub these over the whole car and it will give it a better shine and help keep it clean, takes a while to do but lasts ages

I live in west verginia, which is in america, and as long as you pass your drivers test then your allowed to have a car and drive it by yourself.:D

Best advice I can give about washing a car - pay someone else to do it. Its way to much like work for my tastes.

I agree but can go one better. My sons do mine for free. They\'re the sole reason I had kids :D

In California, you can own a car even if you don\'t have a license as long as it has insurance and you don\'t drive it. Does that make any sense? But then, look what we did with Paris Hilton (ooo! I opened a can of worms! )

I\'d really rather not.
Wasn\'t she kicked out of Blonde School for being Too Dumb.

As for Car washing, pay someone, that way you are contributing to the labour market and they\'ll use less water than you will and thereby save on your utilities bill.

Same as the UK (IIRC). You can get a provisional license at 16 and buy a car. But you can\'t take a full test until you are 17. Which IMO is a bit daft, why would you want a car you can\'t drive?

Why would you want piles and piles and piles of bits of plastic and metal that your never going to get round to painting?

I have a much better solution, seriously!
You have to meet yourself half way here.
Have a few beers before and while you\'re washing the car, bit of soap and water, slap it on there.
By the time you get \"finished\" you\'ll be rolling about in the suds and can sit back and congratulate yourself on an immense job well done!
Reward yourself with a beer!!!

I can see how this method could be a problem for you though...
