Watch the virus!

A couple of CMON members have been passed a virus. I was one of them, the other shall remain anonymous. In trying to ascertain where this damn thing originated from the other CMON member would not cooperate because they, \'had a MAC\' and \"wanted the virus to spread\". I shall keep quiet about this only for so long.
I am only posting this here because the infected person must have me and the other member in their address books. It is almost certainly a CMON member therefore who has the problem.
Check it out folks...are you sending virii laden emails?

Thanks for the heads up Steve. As for the other individual, I feel you should report them to the moderators, since viruses are a serious matter, and a desire to screw up someones system simply because they do not own a similar niche computer is beyond reproach.

That is certainly the way I feel. I am just pretty depressed at the moment because someone I thought had a conscience, clearly doesn\'t.:(

I am very sorry you took it the wrong way, you know I wouldn\'t do something like that, sure I\'m a mac fan, but I hate people who make viruses just as much as you do. I\'m against the MS company, but not the users who this harms. No offense was meant.I am very sorry for upsetting you.

Fine. You are forgiven....

All I want you to do is look at the \'details\' of the email and find out who it really came from so that we can let them know. As they had both our emails they are obviously a friend and they need to be aware....:)

Phew!

I\'m glad you beleived me! I was really worried there.

Lloyd (steelcult) and I are working on the problem, we\'ve retrieved the e-mail, but it only shows that it\'s from you (though you didn\'t send it) and we don\'t know what to do. He\'s going to get back to me tomorrow once he\'s talken to his mac-savy friends :)

I think my computer has a virus, well more of a STD really. There has been a lot of itching lately, and the joystick is burning when its used.....

Seriously, though, things like this are why I\'m glad I have Windows 98, and Norton 04. So many new viruses now are designed specifically for XP, I feel (slightly) safer.

For shame, Dennismech, you callous bastard..........:)

I get em pretty frequently. I also get retarded bounces from crappy gateways.

It is usually pretty fruitless to try to find the \"originator\".
1. WHOIS is only going to tell you what network they are on. I am on Comcast which is located in New Jersey, but I am in California.
2. If it is from a work type address, you likely won\'t even get that.
3. People\'s ips change all the time.
4. People that don\'t stay on top of their virus stuff usually just get it again anyway, or some other variation.
5. You\'re email address is more widespread than you think.
Think about how many times someone sends out an email to a bunch of their friends with some stupid attachment. And how they all get forwarded to some other bunch of people. Most mail viruses troll ALL THAT CRAP to harvest emails. Then they send em out sometimes to the tune of 300 a minute to some random picking of those addresses.
Then someone on that huge ass list starts sending it too.

Add it to the junk mail filter and move on. There are better causes to evangelize. Like white or black primer. Spray on or brush on primer. NMM or metallic.

But, in this case it purported to come from me and sent itself to DennisMech. Aside from the fact that I spent all Saturday checking and disinfecting (I have a 120GB hard drive so running a virus check takes forever) The source must be a fellow CMONer to have us both in their address book and clearly they are infected. I just thought that, that person might like to know that they had the lurgy.

I\'m pretty sure some of the newer viruses spam the from address, so it looks like its been sent by someone in your address book, but it hasn\'t. Maybe thats what happened, or maybe I\'m just starting yet another urban myth, who can tell?

This sounds more like a virus attack as opposed to a virus infection. Somewhere an exchange server has become infected and is randomly sending out spuriuous emails to any address in it\'s address book. And anyone who opens the email continues the infection.The worm itself generates random titles like and purports to have come from someone in your address book saying: RE: your message/Your Email etc.etc.etc

If you have any doubts about how protected your system is go to www.nai.com and download the STINGER program this is a self contained reasonable virus, worm & Trojan killer. This site will also give you good advice on what to look for in regard to Virus(es). {Which is the UK technical & polite term for these attacks}

You might think I\'m sad but I have to check this site daily, due to work and the amount of lost time we have through virus attacks/infections
