Water Colours 3

This goblin sketch is based on a Gary lippincott original from his book "The Fantasy Illustrators technique Book" which I enjoyed. I changed the horns this goblin has into a helmet to mix it up a bit and I wanted to have a go at painting metal. For the metal I used a grey colour with light washes of blue and black in the shadows and a touch of red to reflect the plume a little. Trying to learn to be subtle with watercolour as you dont need much paint a lot of the time!!

Here's my sketch....

A little bit of basic work done. Washing some blue down, then adding thin glazes of grey and a spot of yellow to it to get a soft green skin. Looks okay, just wanted something different!

Lookin' good! Only criticism I have is that the top of the plume is really close to the top of the page if/when this is removed from the spiral book. Be aware of these things if you ever plan on framing it. Other than than, everything else looks good!

Thanks Chrispy. No plans to remove it, it is an A5 sketchbook, so most of it will stay in there for my personal practice really. Funny thing is these photos seem to make it look worse than it is to the naked eye! Guess I might try sizing it to match the sketchbook size next time to give a truer measure of it.

Next painting....Frankenstein. again. Yep I love this character, don't know why but definately my favourite of the classic monsters. My next monster watercolour, goblin folk aside, may be a lich of some kind. But anyway, here are two WIP shots. He is much further along now. The picture below shows him with an ear higher up. My idea was that Dr Frankenstein didnt do a good job stitching stuff on, but as this is a frontal view I couldnt really show botched stitching and placement etc. It just looks like a poorly placed ear. So I changed it up for cauliflower boxer ears. I'll post a closer to completion shot later. The background will be similiar to the first one I think. If this painting turns out okay I may frame it as it is stuck to board at moment.View attachment 21476View attachment 21475

Here's a little goblin head sketch. The Frankenstein picture is finished. Just got to stretch the paper and photograph it on my decent camera rather than my phone.

Thanks mate. Yep, the original drawing by Gary lippincott is very characterful and featured the horns as part of his head, but I wanted to do something to change it a little. I'm pleased with this one, but it has been bettered by the new Frankenstein painting in my opinion. I'll post that soon. Really enjoying the watercolour, but it is tricky to remember working from light to dark, I'm change stuff at the last minute kind of guy which is fine in acrylics, not so much in watercolour lol.

Thanks Moetle. Copying the art of others and changing it up a bit is really speeding up my process and allowing me to get on with learning the painting. I have nearly finished an undead warrior (copy) and here is a quick (not final) version of the new Frank picture...I have adjusted some minor bits, still havent got around to photographing it.... The boxers cauliflower ears didn't turn out too well even after some adjustment.

Here is a quick shot of a WIP on the goblin head sketches. Done on the supposedly sunny shores of Newquay beach inside a cave as it started to rain the moment I arrived. Although these are "quick sketches" I must admit, i never actually did these that quick. Very laid back in a kind of can be arsed but will move at the speed of a Cornish bus kind of way. Was being watched by an inquisitive seagull for quite sometime, who gradually hopped all the way over to me on the rocks. Brave of it.

Here's another. This was a quick one. An exercise in some nmm gold mainly. I dont particularly like it at all but the lower mouth is interesting as it was all about removing the paint that was there previously, the tongue and lower jaw are basically painted in water, just a little bit mind as too much would obviously have ruined it. The colours were black, sepia and a bit of yellow. some edges were already actually in the right place. This was actually a fun way to paint.

The orc boy kinda reminds me of Grom from WoW. You really like working with the brighter colors, don't cha? Me- I don't think I've ever used one of my tube paints unmixed, except for maybe carmine red. Still lookin good!

Looks like Grom lol!! Orcs all look the same dont they lol. Can't tell em apart when they are as basic as this. The only two orcs I can tell apart are the big white skinned fella in LOTR Return of the King (kinda obvious he is) and the scrawny goblin wolf rider who fights with Aragorn and knocks him over the cliff.

Well, I do mix some colours, my pallette is fairly muddied and dirty now and I have no intentions of cleaning it for a while yet. I can't say I have favourite colours, but this is practice and that involves repetition so orcs and goblins I like this blue underpainting with the yellow on top. I have thrown in a bit of crimson as well on this latest one. With yellow lighting on high points, but only subtle. Still, these watercolours are hard to control, but I do like the fact I can spit on my brush and fine tune lines if I need to or remove a blemish! I tried oils once, bit smelly and I will return one day, but only on occassion. Acrylics are my favourite I think, but gonna have some fun with watercolour for a while yet.

A little more work...

Posting photos helps me see things that I strangely miss when its right in front of me lol. The nose is off in the picture now. I will continue with it despite the fact that it is not fixable.

Done an oriental wizard sketch in my new Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils. Pretty impressed. Never imagined water colour pencils were actual any good.

Awesome stuff man! This may sound like a silly question, but what are water color pencils? I'm a noob to most art mediums except paint and mini's.
