There\'s a lot of ways: the easiest is just to put heavy gloss over something. For deeper ponds, there\'s train resin that fills in (but it takes a helluva long time to set and it is expensive and can only be used in a container like surface). My favorite is clear flocking gel from Renaissance Inks (available through Brookhursthobbies), it\'s thick so you can move it around and dries clear, you can also put ink in it to slightly color it. I also like Realistic Water Effeects from Woodland Scenics. Again, it\'s clear, but it can be shaped even more for churning water, rapids, seafoam, splashes, waterfalls, etc, etc..
Hope this helps!

Another thing that works pretty well is Elmer\'s (or any white PVA) glue.

I made a pond in one of my game boards by basically digging a hole in the foam where I wanted the pond. I painted the area dark blue in the middle, and brought it up to a greenish color along the edges. I poured in some white glue, and let it dry. For good measure, I then brushed some gloss varnish over it, and was done.

I\'ve also read that you can tilt your piece some and let the glue flow over the area a bit to get some ripples. I haven\'t tried this, but I\'d guess that you might want to wait until the glue is near dry, or at least dry on top.

Waterfall example

makeitgameit: I also use Realistic Water Effects from Woodland Scenics. It\'s superb for swirling waters, rapids, etc.(very thick) and holds its shape well.

I\'ve attached a few pics to show how I used fishing line, attached to my sculpted cave/rock, as an anchor for my waterfall. Hope this helps a little, but feel free to ask questions!:D

I found white glue works well when you have a very sturdy base, otherwize it warps it hideously. Also glue tends to get damaged easily (scrached and gouged by mini bases when used for terrain) so I suggest a gloss coat on top of that. I have also seen these plastic pellets that you melt with a hair dryer in some hobby shops, but haven\'t had the guts to try them, has anyone?

Thanks for all your suggestions, I have tried white glue (PVA), but was unhappy with the results, was looking for something more realistic,

Nailpainter , Very interested in the Woodland Scenics stuff, were do you get it from, I am in the UK.

You can get it from model railway stores or online.

This site lists the UK Stockists:

This site is a good online source. I\'ve used them before:

Woodland Scenics Water Effects is great for water falls and rivers, etc. where you can\'t pour the water. They also have a product I believe is called Realistic Water which can be poured, but it shrinks terribly. I\'ve had good luck with a resin/hardener that i\'ve found in craft stores. I\'m out at the moment so I don\'t recall the brand. The resin/hardener can be colored and has minimal shrinkage and sets up fast. You could also use two part liquid decoupage. Check out the terrain page at http://www.jahecker.com there are two examples of water effects \"Fieldstone Stable\" and \"Fieldstome Bridge\" feel free to email with any questions. lol

cool,

if you could find out what it is called i would be very grateful.

i would like to try lots of stuff to see what works for me, so the more ways i find of making water effects the better.

thanks

I found the name of one type of 1 to 1 polymer coating. \"EnviroTex Lite\" Do a Google search on that name, they have a website. It cures perfectly clear. After you pour the basic water, use Woodland Scenics \"Water Effects\" to add ripples and such. You can even enhance the ripples by drybrushing a very thin, (should be thinned to an opaque consistency), coat of white or off white paint to the high spots (especially effective for fast moving water, and waterfall effects)

I will try to find the brand name of the resin/hardener I mentioned previously, however, if you go to any craft store or possibly hardware store and ask for a resin that cures clear. Most can be colored with inks and such.

I would steer away from the melty water pellets. They melted my terrain and plastic plants when I poured it on (dumb on my part - I know) it didnt take to coloring at all, and cracked after it dried, and I had it on a pretty sturdy base.

Woodland scenics realistic water is the way to go...

BTW - nice diorama Nailpainter!

i have used hgih gloss yacht varnish as it is VERY strong and has a slight brownisht tint that makes it look quite realistic. also if you don\'t mind it being cloudy, try sealant for fish tanks. very good for small areas of white water as it still has some opacity.
