We Need a New Forum Feature

I must admit I dont come on here as much as I would like to, why, I find it hard to keep up with new posts. I am active on quite a few forums, and they all have a feature I think this one should have.

A button you can press that shows all new posts since you last visited. I think this would be a great add on, its on all the other I go on, so shouldn\'t be too hard to add, so can it be?

But if you subscribe to a lot of threads (especially popular ones), your email inbox ends up getting spammed with notifications, which is quite annoying. There may be a way to change this, tho. I haven\'t looked.

I *counts on fingers* 4th that! That is one awesome button. Its so easy too, like internet has to be. For lazy people:D

Yeah, even my LGS site has this feature.
Makes it easier to be involved, and isn\'t that what makes this site so worthwhile?:D

the subscribtion feature only works if you keep track of all the new threads.
if you don\'t visit the forum often, you could miss a lot of great threads, just because you weren\'t online when they were \"hot\".

i attend a number of other forums that do have this feature, it\'s probably the most feature i use the most...

on a similar note, i think the search function could use quite a lot of refining, right now, searching for something gets you almost half a page of results linking to the same topic....

maybe add a feature to search in topic titles only, or just the first post, not in the entire thread text.

There is something somewhat similar to this already there. When you go to the main CMON page it shows you all threads with new posts in the last day.

I realize a lot of people may come direct to the forums, but if you to the main page and scroll down a bit you will see it.

Now this doesn\'t show you every post since you were last on, as it only tracks a days worth but it\'s what I use to catch up.

that\'s what i use to stay current too, but that still means i miss a lot, especially if i\'ve been gone for a week or so....

If you want to give this idea a decent chance to be coded, you should post it in the forum that Chern and Borg read the most often :

Feedback/Bugs/Wish List

I\'d also add that in the search function, you can already show posts that are a day old, a week old, a month old, ... which is more or less what you\'re asking.

I think a more complete search function would be more useful (search by user defined date interval, group the threads or link to the specific post, highlight search terms in the posts, ...).

It might be hard to do, given the site was home programmed from the ground up I think.

Most other forums rely on one of the free or commercial BB softwares, many of which are years old and have been tweaked and upgraded dozens of times over the years, incorporating features that were initially third-party plugins and cracks.

Just to point out that a lot of commercial forum software doesn\'t include the ability to search between dates.

The ability to return search results that link to a specific post would be the best single search improvement IMO.

The simplest upgrade to implement I\'d think, which I\'d also like to see a lot, would be to be able to search backwards and forwards from the set intervals - \"and Newer\", \"and Older\" in vBulletin.

True, but for \"advanced\" searches it would be helpful (and it\'s technically the same thing as the already existing fixed intervals). I\'ve lost track of the number of times I wanted to search for threads older than a year old ... going through all those pages is a nightmare.

And yes, being able to sort by table column would be sweet too ;).

And, Einion, I confirm you that CMON is home programmed ;). So it\'s basically a case of what free time Chern has to code new things and what he agrees to do.
