over the past 6 years i have probally painted over 50 terminator models1 and the onley decent conversions ive been able to do with them is a bit of leg and arm re-adjusting, plus the odd bits and pieces and sculpting!

what i want is new plastics, which are more posible!

Exactly! Here I think the Grey Knights are gonna be plastics, and they turn out to be heaavy metal! To me, it\'s not worth buying a metal fig just for a shoulder pad when I can get a whole sprue of them! It can be argued that you should just make yer own out of existing ones, but I know how hard that is so I shut up.. :p

Actually...

I rather like the metal Space Marine Terminators, and their Chaos equivalents. They look exactly how someone armor weighing a ton should look... slow and solid. If you start sticking them in all sorts of dynamic poses, it sort of defeats the look that I believe Jes Goodwin was going for.

However, now that Jes is heading up the plastics division at GW, we\'re seeing less and less of his sculpting prowess. I believe that Juan Diaz is responsible for the new Grey Knights (he also did both versions of the Emperor\'s Champion, the current Biovore model, and the current Fire Dragons aspect warriors). While I think that Juan\'s work is satisfactory (now to mention about 100 times better than I could do), it really doesn\'t compare to the master that is Jes Goodwin, especially when it comes to Space Marines, the line that he has almost singlehandedly designed since their inception from Rogue Trader.

Jes\' models, along with John Balanche\'s art and Andy Chambers\' fiction (and to a lesser extent also Rick Priestley and Jervis Johnson) is what really defines the WH40k universe, and its a little sad to see one of the big three move on to a new venture (although I\'m sure it pays more... and the plastic kits have been improving dramatically).

Anyway... my two cents.

Speaking of Jervis and Rick, what happened to the standard they set? Three of the best gaming books ever produced were the \"Realm of Chaos \" books and Rogue trader. After recently buing the Imperial Gaurd codex And the Chaos Army book for WFB, it seems like these books are getting leaner and leaner. I almost wish that some fanboy company would reprint these earlier volumes, kind of like they did with Warhammer Roleplay. On a side note, does anyone know what Rick Preistly is up too? It almost seems that the down turn for GW came when he seemed to dissappear from the books and WD.:(

I don\'t want to sound like an old fart, but personally I think that the best terminator models were those released in the original terminator boxed set back in 88! The over all design of those models is really good. When GW began to do their familiar redesign marketing ploy, the models just went down hill. There\'s only so much you can change without producing a completely different model. First, the models seemed to become simpler. The legs, shoulder pads and weapons were made sleeker but lost all aesthetic qualities in the process. Now the models seem chunkier, more angular and less organic, and carry even larger weapons. I really think that\'s one set of models that GW got right first time around (bar the 3 prototype versions that were released prior to the boxed set!).

Hey, anybody remember those bloody awful terminator librarians that came with the Genestealer expansion for Space Hulk? How bad were they?! Whoever sculpted those should have their hands cut off.

:D

terminators

Yes the Space Hulk Librarians were awful, but not as bad as their regular terminators that came with the set.
Those huge force axes make for some great conversions though.
BTW, I like the prototype terminators.

I just recently made a squad of chaos terminators, using the Obliterator bodies. It makes(imho) for a much more dynamic model, that is less static and looks like it can actually lift those weapons. The current chaos terminators have way too much detail crammed into a tiny space making them look rather busy and no fun to paint.

remember that one epic rule...

the one that states that termies get an invulnerable save from titans? whats that all about?

i think its just asking too much for running poses, but not holding the storm bolter out/ holding nemesis halberds. the grey knights might bend a little too much though...

i dunno, maybe GW just wanted them static until now. i\'ve converted a couple of 2nd ed termies (standard storm bolter/power fist) and found no thinner pewter than at least 3/4\" thick. could anyone run in that? hell no, not unless they were a thick marine hero/10,000 year old chaos marine.

ohh.. and btw... i\'ll paint my 1st edition librarian as good as i can, and maybe post it.
lol

I have to argree with your post, yes to all...but the plastics GW is offering of late are imho really getting as good as the metal figures.

I love em more and more, and they are so good to work with for conversions!

I hope they continue to improve on the casting process for their plastic range.

On the other hand...I would not like to see metal go the way of the T-Rex either.

Why delete original Grey Knights?

I really have problems with this debate. On the one hand I love painting termies, I can do it with my brain switched totally off and still get a generally good result. I just love their size, solidity and presence. I am not into chaos, but the detail on chaos minis has always challenged me as a painter. A challenge I have yet to accept! IMO the best termies GW ever knocked out were the original Grey Knights. A painters dream and a classic sculpt. The new ones look good, but I\'ll hang on to my originals I think.:D

I use Dark Angel Deathwing Terminators as Blood Angel Terminators, they look much better than normal terminator minis.

No Jez did the new GK Termies and they are very nice minis, much better thn the old ones, especially the shoulder joints.

How is Juan\'s work satisfactory? Godlike I would say. He\'s giving Jez a run for his money, something no-one has been able to do, (although Brian Nelson is very good). The emperors champ, Necron Lord and new Slann are all Juan and all awesome :) Can you tell I like his work? :D

New plastic terminators are coming

I have it on reasonably good authority that there will be new plastic terminators for release somewhere between Summer 2004 and Summer 2005 at around the same time as 40K 4th ed (really 3.5) and the plastic Devastators.

Although details on how they will look is sketchy, I understand that there will be little change to the overall appearance, but the posability will improve.

Of less repute is the rumour that these were designed by Jes.

The original boxed set of terminators are among my favorite 40k models, so much so that when I decided to paint up a squad of Imperial Fist teminators I bought new rather than repaint my 10 year old Ultra Marines.

I bought the originals to use in Space Hulk as I agree with others that the termies supplied leave something to be desired.

The old style termies look just right for the game- big, heavy, slow and powerful, (and I will admit that for my Imp Fists I bought metal not plastic - Finn please note - a concession to you!)

So I was looking forward to the new Grey Knights release- was I disssapointed?

In a word - yes!

When I saw the first pictures in WD I thought I was looking at normal Marines!

I can understand trying to get more flexibility into the line but IMHO GW have gone too far - who wants Termies that look like the could take part in a ballet? - not me.

Am I alone here?

you are crazy Nomis

dear god man! you like the old termies? In my opinion they are some of the worst models GW has ever produced! The new (grey knight) ones are bigger, and actualy look like they can move! The old ones were so static. I\'m hoping the new plstic terminators follow in this style.

Well...the plastic terminators are now out-and have been for a while. I, a metal and Termi lover, was dubious until I picked up the box. They are simply the coolest model terms I\'ve seen. They are larger(so look \"correct\" to scale), have very close to equal detail(and give you decorations that you put on or leave off as you chose), and are now wonderfully poseable and modifiable.
Plus the larger bases help keep them more stable-I have a squad of Thunder Hammer terminators in pewter that fall if a breeze touches them- well no more.

I also picked up a set off the new Grey Knights. I find myself liking the models and the increased size but im not sure they are \"gothic\" enough. Part of this (IMO) reflects the change from psychotic terror troops to more \"ultimate good guy\" troops(with still a tinge of psychosis). They seem somehow...more noble now.

Well, some of us missed it the first time around.

I think it\'s worth revisiting. I\'d particularly like to know if blue^shift ever painted his old librarian.
I found this one on the site:

and for the old original Space Hulk Terminators we now have this example:
