Weapons from Brown Stuff?

Okay, usually I\'m the Help-ER and not the Help-ED here, but this stuff has got me down. First, do I even have the right brown stuff? It\'s got a metallic sheen to it when mixed, but never looks like any of the greens I\'ve seen, and I don\'t know if it gets darker after harding or what...

Speaking of harding, that\'s the problem, I got it because I thought it was harder than GS, but it seems to be the same texture to me!! I can\'t get it to hold the shape I want because I need it thin for this blade, but it keeps moving!

So, how the heck do you sculpt harder edges? It seems harder at this point than with regular GS.. Do you wait untill it\'s dry and then cut it, or do you have to build it up?

This is really frustrating because I want to finally finish this green I\'ve been putting aside and maybe do a few more for practice. Thanks to all!

Hokay!

... ok enough of the nuking the world references.

To your problem. My experience is this...

I HATE SCUPLTING BLADES!! <-- ok anger is now over..

I just use plasticard to make a nice hard blade edge that looks 50 times better and more realistic than any green blade i would ever make (of course i limit myself to rescuplting hands, fur, faces...)

So basically what i am saying is cut you blade from plasticard, then scuplt on the hilt, etc. onto the balde and model.

cheers:D

Ain\'t gonna work- blade is on a scythe, and there\'s nothing like I want on any other mini. Plus, like I say I want to figure out sculpting, so... Any more Hilites? :p

Hehe...

Ok well for your sanity and some help... take brown stuff and let it cure some. You know to where its a little hard and will hold shape, but it can still be moved and such. Then get a nice hard, flat, nonstick surface and flatten out the basic shape and then cut away any excess. add this to the model. after it drys completely (make the blade much smaller than you actually want it) use normal green stuff to fill it out and add details like cracks, jags, daemonic faces etc.

One more Hilite from Hi-Lite-R

Cheers:bouncy:

Hard lines.....

Heya Chris,
For my brown stuff weapons, I generally use a thin metal wire core cut to size, and then add the mixed brown stuff round that, getting it first into the basic shape I want. When it is cured some more (maybe 30 mintues time) I shape it some more with a flat tool and plenty of water to get it closer to the final shape I want (though slightly larger than the actual size I want... it doesn\'t have to be totally smooth or clean at this point, just the right kind of shape) The wire core keeps some rigidity to the uncured brown stuff helping the process. At this point the key property of brown stuff (for me) comes into play.. once cured fully (24 hours) it becomes very hard and can be filed/sanded into shape with some patience. I use my Dremel for this (with a fine sanding disc on) but if you have unsteady hands I wouldn\'t recommend this. Probably best to use a sanding block, or small flat needle files. The weapon on my latest sculpt was made by this method, and it allows you to get very sharp, clean edges. Well that is just the way I do it anyway... try and it and see what you think ;)
Later (and good luck :) ) - Pete (P.S PM or email me if you need any more info)

Well here\'s what allan does, it\'s in one of is article wich I have yet to translate:
Take brown stuff and place it between to plastic surface, then let it cure completly. Once it drie take out of between the two plaques ( CD work nicely), fill the small gapes with green stuff, and cut it to appropriate shape. Use the dremel to do the edge. And voila !! completed blade. good luck
