Weathering/chipping

Hiya,

I\'m in the process of painting Cadians in a dark red colour and was thinking of trying the chipped/weathered style on them. Anyone got ideas/advice what colours those chips can be painted in to produce a realistic effect? The red is really dark so it won\'t look good with black.

Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about paint chips? A guy I know at our local store done some chips on a chimera by just painting the thing normally, then painting metal chip shapes on the edges, basically just painting little bits of metal over the paint job on the edges.

Tahn: yup, paint chips. Although I\'m not fond of bare metal, most military vehicles/weapons seem to have been primed before adding camo colours and such. And it\'s the colour of the primer I\'m after :)

Ritual: ah, brown might actually work. Thanks.

If you want a primered surface to be visible, I\'d go for a grey one. Use the brown to emphasize the contour between the red and the grey and to create a false 3D effect. The brown contour must be very fine so a good idea is to start painting the chipped are brown, then paint the grey and just leave a fine brown contour inbetween the grey and the red.

As with what Ritual said - Having the thin layer of brown showing between the red \"painted\" areas and the grey \"primered\" areas - but if you can help it - to make it appear slightly more 3D - have one edge of the chips slightly thicker.

Also - brown is a great base coat for reds (Snakebite will really bring out the richness of blood red for example)

Also, smaller is better when it comes to chips. It\'s easy to overdo it. A handful of well placed chips will look much better than a ton of chips all over.
