Weird Association

Nifty title. Bear with me.
We had a few friends around at the weekend and to rib me the GF started on about my \'little men\' and the fact that I am currently making a castle to play with them on.
No amount of words on the fact that I was in fact making a diorama for display purposes and the fact that my \'little men\' are actually precision sculpted miniatures. could rectify my slump into new levels of geekdom. This got me thinking back to the early eighties when some of my friend were banned from playing D&D due to the fear of devil worship. Having been out of the hobby for a while and being able to do most of my shopping online (phew!).
Is the hobby still in general and polite society frowned upon and given a Weird Associations status?
Because if it is now far more acceptable then I can look at more sites at work whilst there are the \'Norms\' in the office.

If not it\'s 6 months till I can return to the Games workshop under the cover of darkness after work.
:D

This site is about minis, and is only somewhat interested in games. (lot of warhammer, wh4ok, d&d, battletech and some other stuff represented here.)

For D&D, try this set of forums:
http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=8

D&D is now owned by Wizards of the Coats (magic the gathering) but is being bought out by Hasbro. (cheap plactic toys).

But overall, yes, we are still considered geeks. Although some of us strive to be nerds.

Get that from my friends too, they all think I\'m weird spending all that money and time in little lead people that I paint and then push around a table pretending they\'re fighting :p So I usually don\'t talk to them about it, a part from those time when they ask me about it and I get carried away trying to talk them into it, but usually gets me even weirder looks :p Oh well thanks to Cmon I got people to talk to about my addiction, I even got a psychologist to talk too even though he might be the most addicted of us all ( Since I haven\'t seen any minis of his i can\'t really be sure;)) :D

I think you\'re correct, Finn. I believe the upward progression is:

dork --> nerd --> geek

Yes, Greymane, we are still considered weird, strange, and unclean. Course after going to the local gaming shop on a Friday night during a free gaming session, I can understand the unclean part - :D

It\'s possibly a benefit of age...

(not to mention a good salary:D )

But I now revel in my geekness.

I compare my minis to Krugerands and basically,I am now in a position where I couldn\'t give a toss if folks think I am a geek:D

It\'s a bit tougher when you are younger however, and I really apreciate the difficulties involved:(

You will win through however:flip:

I\'m a nurd chick and proud of it

As well as painting figures (yes, I do paint occasionally), I also work in IT. So I guess there\'s just no hope for me and the countless other people who lurk within these forums, who are in the same profession.

You\'ll be safe here in the dark recesses, where people mutter about NMM and other less painful techniques.

Feel shunned no more brother...for you are truely amongst friends :D

Nurse! NURSE!! BRING ME MY BRUSHES!!! :duh:

Therein lay the problem It was this site that brought me back to mini\'s, therefore for the last few months I have been cosetted by the thick padded wall of CMON. It\'s the others outside that don\'t understand *quickly looks over shoulder*.
All things Mini had become the norm.

:D

I get the occasional raised eyebrow, but my \"norm\" friends are kinda impressed with the work that goes into doing mini stuff. My friend who took my more recent pics likes looking at them, and was more than happy to do the pics, but couldn\'t be bothered to visit cmon.:)

In my area Warhammer is the \'naughty little secret\'. The thing everyone does but is so afraid of being ridiculed for that they don\'t admit it to anyone until they get a new player in town who asks if anyone has heard of a game called Warhammer 40k, then the real fun begins.

Where not geeks, in fact there are two certified nerds and two firefighters in my local hobby group.

What? Me, wierd?

Anyone who knows me knows that my painting tiny metal figures is one of the more \"normal\" things I like to do.

I also like Japanese anime, and my parents just don\'t understand these \"cartoons\" I watch when I visit.
I try to explain that they\'re more adult-oriented (i.e. Cartoon Network\'s Adult Swim block), but my mother just looks at me like I\'ve got two heads.
*sigh*

I still miss the D&D days....

Funny, cause it seems to me nowadays if you DON\'T like anime, you\'re considered odd (at least in the scifi/gaming/comic book circles).

I personally can\'t stand the stuff and get a lot of grief as a result.

No problem...

I an so F*cking old no one ever gives a sh*t. My peers are always discussing the benefits of bay windows as opposed to bow windows...

God help me...???

I thought I had come to terms....

Well, I wanted to say how, like Finn, I can revel in my geekness.

I had seriously thought that I have gotten past the part where I keep this hobby my dirty little secret. My family knows, my neighbor knows.

The other day, I was at the coffee shop with a few of my co-workers. They are a gruff bunch of folks and one had just told everyone how he spend 140 dollars on a fishing rod.

The others laughed, and one said, \"well we all have our \'thing\' that we spend money on.\" \"Mine,\" he says is rifles. I just spend about a 1000 on a new one.\" \"What about you\" he says to another co worker.

\"Horses. I have a lot of money tied up in that\".

\"What about you Bill? (only Bill and I were left at the table) \"Golf. I got a serious set of new clubs just recently.\"

\"Well, Jim, what is your \'thing\'?

All these hardened phone workers turn and look at me, waiting for my response.

Here, I thought, would be my chance to come to terms and say \"I paint these little metal guys, some of them are elves, and goblins, but I am partial to demons and barbarians.\"

But what I really said, \"I like computers and electronic gadgets.\"

Approving nods all around.

God, I am so ashamed.

:(
