I went to my local hobby shop (been going there for my entire life <-- not exaggerated) and found out that they are closing up at the end of the month. no more going into the store and chatting with people, no more looking aound at all of the boxes, no more awesomeness. there were two whole tables filled with way OOP stuff, to make a bit of money to help get the owner back in school to be a paramedic. among the stuff I got were

17 rouge trader marines, two missiles, one flamer
6 2nd edition blood angel death company marines
6 rouge trader orks
1 ?ed. ork storm boy
1 bertand the brigand and accomplices blister

It saddens me that the place is closing up. i\'ts been ingrained in my saturdays since, forever.

Sorry to hear that the shop is closing. There were a few comic shops in my time that i was always at and still miss that are no longer there.

Weird. It felt a little strange when we went to the Colorado Mills last week and found the GW store closed. I\'m not a big fan of the products, but it was still a surprise. Now the nearest GW store (full blown, not affiliate LGS) is Houston. Last year saw the close of the only hobby shop that is along my commute home, and that was very sad. I\'d only been here a few months and thought I\'d found something nice.

Seems lots of smaller shops are closing. Had a more doll-house oriented hobby shop close right after we moved here. Never even had a chance to go in and look around. And even regular shops are closing, not just hobby. Figure that single-item shopkeeps like smaller hobby stores just can\'t keep enough things on hand that compete well enough with the internet.

Probably a safe bet that the local coffee/hobby/comic book/game/live music venue close by will succeed. Guess I should go spend some money soon or they won\'t! lol

Support your LGS! I know in this day and age it\'s real convenient and cheaper to do things over the internet and the small specialty stores are feeling the change first and hardest.

I try my hardest to support my LGS (Dragon\'s Den Games here in Saskatoon!) but if my wife found out I was spending about 10-20% more for the exact same stuff it might be a pretty tough slog for me to convince her of the merits of buying from them!

And the one I was talking about might have a shelf of things to paint. Its a lot more coffee shop and game tables than hobby. Still, I\'ve been meaning to go. Now if only the dry wall, grass, cabinets, floors, and other house things would fix themselves so I could!

ours isn\'t even that. it has a fridge though. mostly like a forbidden planet - toys not that ours aren\'t but you know what i mean) and comics

Yea, its bad that some indys are closing down, but its all for the greater good though. I mean, where would we all be without Games Workshop? Eh? They deserve our money!


Sorry, rant aside now: I got a great deal on some 54mm british infantry models when one of my local stores closed, it was sad, but profitable at the same time.

thanks for the sympathy. I\'ve never really known a world without the place. Well, As of 3rd period in class today, the economy is perking up a bit, so perhaps the guy will get that loan. Too bad there wont be a Jeff any more, though. Ah well, \'tis the way of the world. But really, this place was the ultimate gameshop. ~60 feet of shelfspace for GW, FoW, and PP stuff and books (most of the books are DnD), another 60 for paints and brushes, and sculpting supplies, the rest of the space was historical models. five open gaming tables and a display case for patron-painted stuff (myself having something in there). A lot of models were 20-30% off retail... Man, I am really going to miss that place.

Unless it\'s a \'deal I just can\'t pass up\' I buy as much stuff as I can through my local store. I\'m fully aware of the \'support it or it goes away\' relationship.

The local store changed hands within the last year but all the changes seem to have been for the better, at least on the gaming side. They\'ve cleaned out all the stuff gathering dust and opened up the entire center of the store with gaming tables. It\'s a rare time when you go in there now and there aren\'t at least two games running.

I do demos and run games there whenever I can, just to lend my support and keep the place running.

I\'d hate to have it close. A small store in the next town north of me is closing this month but I never was able to get there. Their hours just didn\'t work out for when I could make the trip. I guess that was the case for a lot of people.

Always sad to see a local shop close. There\'s been a few close that I went to.

Lots of people in AZ think that they can run a game store because they love to play the games, but know nothing about operating a business. We\'re bound to see a few more fail sometime soon. Right now we have lots of stores but not enough gamers. It\'s too bad this hobby isn\'t more mainstream.

I just wish the little guys were given a chance to compete. I try my hardest to support the FLGS the problem is their prices are SO much higher then places like Amazon.ca. For example I just bought a Privateer Press rulebook for $10 off ebay. The same book was $26 on Amazon, and $58!!!! at the FLGS. I can\'t afford to spend an extra $48 on a book just to keep the FLGS going.

I also know it\'s not the owner\'s fault, but that of the distributers who are gouging the stores. The fact that most companies don\'t realize the Canadian dollar was worth more then the US for a good portion of the summer and still want to charge us an aditional 40% more doesn\'t help either.

I support the FLGS when I can, but sometimes I just can\'t afford it. It\'s tough economic times for those of us who don\'t own stores as well.

On a more positive note: figured out Knights of the Dinner Table was cheaper to pick up in store every month rather then to Subscribe, so that\'s one part of my budget now dedicated to the FLGS.

I do everything I can to support the FLGS that just opened up here last month. Before this place opened, I had to drive to Fresno (50 mins) to get to a store where the owner doesn\'t like professional painters or stocking product. The cost of gas to get there was more expensive than the shipping, and the GW website was way more interesting to hang out in...

Now I\'m doing painting classes, handing out business cards by the dozens, and even built a wargames table for them just so I can help keep our place to play open.

I buy my Buffy Season 8 at the FLGS, and any graphic novels I fancy (\"Pride of Baghdad\" blew me away). Otherwise... well they\'re a GW store so I really don\'t buy any minis there
