I\'ve got myself a two and half week painting window while my wife and baby are away in Poland so I can get around to some proper projects etc. Part of this will be my first attempts at scenic bases and dioramas. In preparation for this I went to my local GW store on Saturday morning and completed my paint collection (now have the full range of paints and inks) and bought the new hero basing kit amongst other things.

When I got home and opened my goodies, I must say I was very pleasantly surprised with the basing kit contents. Slate pieces of various sizes, clump foliage, dead grass and resin pieces with various bones, skulls etc - good level of detail, quite inspiring and not too expensive.

I\'ve already put some of it to good use on my ongoing ogre project and am looking forward to incorporating more soon.

So, I just wanted to buck the trend a little and say \"well done\" to GW for a good quality product. Credit where it\'s due :beer:

Sad thing that when hey make a quality product they make them limited edition. I probarbly wont be able to get hold of one as the only modelshop in Iceland doesn\'t stock it, and the tax here and shipping is outragous

The Urban basing stuff was discussed a bit when they released it. I think my views on the WFB variant would be the same.

The only stuff you can\'t get elsewhere from that set are the resin skulls and bones. The rest you can get (cheaper) from other sources.

Ritual if you can find me a source for those slate chips of different sizes Id be thrilled because in all my years of modeling.. well over 25 Ive never seen a product like that sold..

The resin skull piles are easy.

For me, the convenience of having this selection available in one pack and having the slate pieces exctly the right size etc made it well worth buying. In fact, depending on how much painting I get done over the next week, I may invest in another pack as it\'s limited edition.

Yep, garden centres, or even some flower shops, sell them for peanuts!

While I agree in principle, that this kit is very good, all of its parts are available from elsewhere. We have a discussion with our local GW people and came to the conclusion that market of these kits is very, well, \"limited\"

If you think about it, people who does modeling, all the time probably have all components of this kit already and much more. People who never do conversions/basing probably will not need it. So, what remains are people who just started and want all of this quick and from one sourse. Hence the \"limited\" edition.

Yep, that\'s me. It\'s a good way to get started with more elaborate bases. I\'ve always put off trying things like scenic or distinctive bases (even using sand was a big step for me) because they seemed too complicated. This kind of kit just makes it a bit easier to try new things.

It must be a regional thing because here in the states where I live no such thing exsists. Wehave crushed rock in gargen stores but nothing like that..I can get slates for gargen path ways at landscapeing places but they are huge and weigh 100\'s of pounds

DFD, come here in italy ! lol we are full of slate rocks (scisti in italian), mainly in Val D\'Aosta, Umbria and Abruzzo regions , they are common in countries with volcanos (geomorphism i think..)

so this basing kit.. almost useless for me

Ummmm No! lol it was much easier for me to call my LGS 5 min ago and ask him to order me 2 just like he did the 40K basing kit a while back..much easier and far cheaper than a trip to rome to get rocks.

I have this problem in Georgia too. All the slate I can find is amazingly large pieces that I won\'t use up. I might have to buy one of these kits just for the slate.

see Ive checked fish stores here to.. just small crushed colored granet is all I can find here..
