What am I doing wrong here?

Hi, this is my first attempt on battle damaged armour. As you can see, it sucks. I wonder what i\'m doing wrong. I\'d really appreciate your opinions. Thanks!

doesn\'t look too bad, don\'t forget the white line has to be at the bottom of the \"cut\" as the top of the cut would be in shadow

Kinda hard to tell from the photo, but it dosent look too bad.

A while back Klute did a short article on painting notches that was really easy to learn. Good article.

Black line on top metal underneath. Dont go overboard or it looks crap. Not too bad so far tho.

Looks fine so far. One thing i do is i apply the wear and tear after i have finnished highlighting everything. Dunno if everyone else does it this way or not but it works for me. Also if your going to add a lighter tone underneath the scratch/damage then i would first dry fix it to your mini so you see where the underneath actually is with regards to a downward light source...hope this makes sense.
