Oh god. I feel like I\'m back at work. I deal with people like those phone people all the time. <sigh>

That video is really annoying. If I were the guy trying to explain to those people the difference between cents and dollars I would throw a fit.

The dude is arguing semantics here.

The standard for quoting a rate would be in dollars, there is some confusion, granted, but it\'s on the CALLERS side.

Just by calling it \'cents\' over \'dollars\' doesn\'t add more zeros to the calculation.

No one would say that a miniature is
1000 cents.

They service folks are confused as they don\'t see what he is getting at, but it is just general practice to call values LESS than a dollar as \'cents\'.

He is trying to convince them that the rate is really .00002

It\'s not and he owes them 70 bucks.

I disagree about semantics. $0.002 is not the same thing as 0.002 cents.

If I was quoted a rate of 0.002 cents and then when the bill came in I was asked to pay $0.002 I would be pissed as well.

Either way this is pretty old, from at least 07 if not 06. www.verizonmath.com sprung up from the original blog post.

I agree i would be pissed too, in no way are they the same amount.

Its like saying that £0.1 is the same as 0.1p

Where actually £0.1=10p, not 0.1p, which is what this phone call is about.

In my opinion Verizon is fully aware of this. I\'m sure it\'s a scam on the verizon part. It\'s not the firs time I was scamed by telephone company... once I was charged by AT&T for adding a long distance plan. When I tried to explain to them that I never wanted it they said that it was made by my son or some third party by clicking on a internet banner. They actually siad that!!! After some harsh words they said that they will remove it. But I will have to be billed for 3 months and they will give me back the difference. well for 3 months they had more money to operate with... I called it an loan to AT&T.

Sorry if it seems like I stole this tread but I would love to hear other stories like that...

@supervike. The standard may be in dollars but if he was actually quoted in cents then it is not about semantics. It\'s possible they made an error in quoting the cost but it still doesn\'t explain why they can\'t grasp the difference between $0.002 and 0.002cents.

They both have clear definitions as to what they are.

It all depends on what they gave him in writing. We didn\'t hear the beginning of the convo, so it\'s possible he\'s trying to confuse them.

But you can\'t get past the woman:
is 1 dollar different from 1 cent?
yes
is 1/2 dollar different from 1/2 cent?
yes
is one thousandth of a dollar different from 1 thousandth of a cent?
no.

???

pardon me? When did math change?
Oh wait, she explains:

It\'s just a difference of opinion!
Well in my opinion 4x4 = 82!

See that was what my point was too. I figured he was trying to confuse them, and cleverly get away with it.

But, I went and checked out his blog, and it explains what he did.

He has an unlimited data plan in America, but was travelling to Canada. He called Verizon to have the data rate quoted to him. They assured him it was .002 CENTS. He made them clarify, and then had them note that on his account.

Even in his further attempts (the recording which is one of them) no one was understanding him.

Verizon finally did refund him the total cost, but admitted no fault.

Of course they wouldn\'t admit a fault. I worked in cell phone cust serv for a time and we were actually told in training not to admit fault. Just appologize, refund if we had to but never admit we were at fault. Now just how you could appologize but not admit fault, that always made me laugh.

Yeah, I was a \'dial zero\' operator for quite some time. I know all about the \'apologies\'. I used to say we were the sorriest company in the country, for as much as we had to apologize.

There is another one out there where they call verizon 56 times and only in 2% of the cases were the answers given right. That\'s pretty bad customer service.

Went though a phone bill thing myself once. Was approached by a guy at the local Mall trying to get me to swap phone plans. I explained at the time that I was a University student and lived at home and didn\'t have my own line. They said no problem but wanted to ask some questions on my current service. I had the time so I did. Three weeks later a phone bill showed up at my parents place for the new company. My parents flipped thinking I signed up for something, which I never did. It took something like 4 months to get everything straightened out.
