Difficult to comment without having seen the mini in question, but I think in general that it's a good thing that small minis are judged equally to larger minis, that simplicity not necessarily is a bad thing when the quality and skill is evident, that the number of minis in your display doesn't matter, etc. I do think that if the base was simply a slotta base it would have been a minus point for that. In most competitions that aren't GD the base is seen as part of the entry and should be taken into account. But, as I haven't seen the miniature I can't say anything for sure.
