Don\'t the paralympians have their own games just after these? I watch those as well as the \"able-bodied\" games.

The Olympic Games are a sacred truce amongst men in order to honour the Gods with athletic games. As such, by definition, there cannot be Olympic Games in countries where human rights are thrashed, therefore there is no need to boycot the Olympic Games this year for the simple fact that there are no Olympic Games taking place. What we have here is simply a commercial farce made to come to pacts with a dictatorial country that can be a good commercial partner, as happened in Berlin in 1936.
I seriously hope to be able to see the olympic games again, but given the complete impotence of the CIO in front of the political and commercial interest and their utter hypocrisy about it I doubt this will happen anywhere soon unless they are all going to step down en masse for the shame of this abuse. Not that I see it likely.

In a country like china, where it seems the worst aspects of Communism and Capitalism have been fused, they certainly don\'t have much of a choice. Either gymnastics is a ticket away from grinding poverty, or it\'s an obligatory state service for those with the ability.
Does anyone know if pushing very young people to such high levels of performance is even healthy? Or will their joints be blown out by the time they\'re 25?
Well, personally I prefer a bit more \"badonkadonk\" on a woman... But that\'s just me.

A young body being forced to high levels of performance can, indeed, be unhealthy.
Flexibility isn\'t really a problem, because children are capable of ludicrous
contortions, anyway.
What needs to be worried about more, in children, is muscular development.
Pushing the muscles too hard, too soon, can result in some pretty serious problems
later in life. My doctor told me not to start weight-lifting until I was at least 13, and
he listed a whole bunch of reasons, but I can\'t remember them, anymore.
Oh, and on the Olympics... I like the Winter Olympics much more. Figure
skating is a particular favourite of mine.
But I\'m not going to stay awake until ludicrous hours to watch any of it.
Highlights are enough to satisfy me.

Mike, I\'d think having a family member like that would make you love the olympics even more.
What I really enjoy is seeing sports that are not normally telecast on a normal Sunday afternoon. How often would you tune in to watch badmitten? rowing? kayaking? pistol? skeet? traps?
( a couple of years ago it was curling.)
Not something you normally see. And they are still competing for an olympic medal.

I like watching the less-covered sports, too, but they\'re mostly on in the early hours here or you have to have digital tv to watch them live, and if there isn\'t British interest in the sports, not much gets shown at more reasonble hours.

When the modern games started, tug of war was a metal sport. I\'ve no complaints about beach volleyball.

It majorly stunts your growth becuase of all the energy you are putting into exercising you arn\'t using for growing. This goes for any sport, a good example is Thomas Daley at the olympics, he can only perform a small number of dives in training sessions because he is so young.

My only very small complaint is that when I think of the \'olympics\' I think of amateur athletes, who during the off years just work like normal folks, and train on their own spare time.
As the olympics close in, they have to leave their jobs and dedicate themselves.
Sounds like a serious committment, but in actuality, most of the \'major\' athletes do nothing other than train and compete year round. And are paid well to do so. And many of those seem like pampered spoiled brats.
Not that the committment level isn\'t still there, but I just liked the romance of the sacrifice and the \'amateur\' status...
Other than that they are incredibly fun to watch.

I honestly can\'t imagine how you think volleyball isn\'t a sport. It\'s two opposing teams competing, while keeping score. Clearly it\'s a sport. More a sport that gymnastics or figure skating, which while they take great skill, are completely subjective in its winners and losers.

Yes I agree, but to me it\'s like synchronised swimming. I always thought of that as a display not a sport.
To me Beach Volleyball has the same status as a \"kick around\" between friends in the local park using jumpers a goalposts.
