What bases do you like your miniatures to come with?

I was wondering what sort of bases people prefer and why. Do you like the ever popular plastic slotta and the mini with a tab? Or how about the seperate cast metal base that comes with extra details like Freebooter miniatures, it might push the price up but the extra options are nice. Or do you like the old style integral base that is cast as part of the miniature?
Curious,
Vic

simple answer from me. Round slotta base.

Can never leave a base as is. On historicals 54mm.s that always come with some form of cast base - the base goes straight in the bin. Bases are just as much part of the creative process for me

I also generally prefer simple plastic bases, that give maximum room for maneuver in creating the atmosphere you want. Although it\'s sometimes fun with specially sculpted bases, like how Freebooter does. I hate it when the bases are cast as part of the mini though, specially if those bases are butt ugly, like Reaper\'s Dark Heaven.

Easy answer: tabbed mini with a slotted base. :) Just give us a tab on the bottom of the mini, Vic. That way we can do what we want.

Revolution have some nice cast bases, but the chances are that cast bases will get modified anyway. I have too much fun making my own bases.

Me too! I love these bases!

And I just cant stand the pre-attached bases like some of the reaper ones have... always have to remove it!

I do like the Freebooter bases. They are very well done and are a great benefit with the mini. I also like the fact that they are removeable, so you are not forced into using them or attempted pewter surgery.

But for the plastics, the Privateer Press ones with the raised edges are the best.

I have ended up never using the slots in slottabases, though the tabs are very useful. With my more recent models I have been using slate on the bases, and I drill into the slate using the tab (plus pinning) to secure it. I always prefer 40mm bases, gives you more space to play with, but it is good fun trying to get an atmosphere and feeling by cramming stuff onto a 20mm. I like round bases, but square has its own charms :innocent: Making bases is one of my favourite parts of modelling. I have two beavers, snow, slate, soil (from a cactus pot, very fine), a ruined chaos shield and saplings on my Youngbloods entry base :wow: took me almost as long as painting the model!

happy painting :bouncy:

i quite like using the GW circular, non slotted bases. the slots on bases sometimes annoy me because sometimes you\'ll have a gap, and you can\'t move them around without snipping them off and using a lot of green stuff

I don\'t like slotta bases because you always have to fill them in, and with 28mm there is never so much weight that the extra stability of a slot is needed.

I\'ve just started removing my space marines from their old slot bases and attaching them to premade industrial/sci-fi bases.

I like the bases of Revelation miniatures. They are simple, so if you like simple you can leave them alone. You could attach them to a regular round base. If you like a more elaborate base you can always add to it.
Plus the mini comes with pegs on the bottoms of the feet to go into holes in the base, which is much better than a big ugly slot.

Make the minis peg-legged

No, not like pirates! Have small pegs coming out of the feet (or tail, or whatever touches the ground). Then include a Freebooter style base with little goodies on it; this way people can choose to re-mount it easily (since most people \'peg\' their minis anyway), and can use the base for something else if they want. Pegs are easier to hide, you won\'t have to have a big nasty slot ruining what would otherwise be a re-useable base, and they are much easier to nip off if people choose to change the pose of the figure.

Just my two cents worth, from someone who does MUCH more modding then actual painting.

EDIT: I didn\'t read the whole thread \'till after I posted, and it seems Vince had the same idea. Sorry Vince. :D

Agree with Markus..If a scnic base is gonna be included I would much prefer it seperate..
I prefer solid top bases or peg typr (gw monster) that allow a little more freedom on positioning..

yeah, tha plastics have it. i have to say though that while i love the pp bases, i could do without the slotta. as people have already mentioned filling it in can suck, and i rarely use it. while im not a huge fan of precast bases, they can be nice. what i do enjoy is a \"base bit\" - a little accessory that is included and can be added (or not) in a way that complements the mini. its a nice comprimise.

I\'ve love \"peg and hole\" bases, like some of GW metal monsters have had (like Rat Ogres.) Drill one hole and put the mini there. I hate having to fill the base slot to camoflage it, and integral bases are irritating to remove.
