As Mr. Brushworth pointed out, you could use sellotape to cover he slot. I use cheap epoxy putty for the job, it also serves as the glue to keep the mini on the base.
I often snip the tabs off the bottoms of minis too, but leaving a healthy stub under each foot. This is a lot more sturdy than the narrow pins that some minis, like the Revolution ones, have. You could, of course, snip the tabs off and put pins in instead.
Yeah, slotta bases are more work, but I reckon they remain the most flexible.
