Just a follow-up to my other poll on how many paints people use. A lot of people were mentioning specific brands, so I'm curious as to which brands people favor.

And I do realize that people typically use more than one brand. But imgine if you had to get rid of all but one of your brands, which one would you keep?

(Oops, that last option was supposed to be "Paint is for pussies." That's what I get for posting when exhausted...)

Even as I branch out I still keep coming back to Citadel. I like their colors and the way the paint behaves. Also, it tastes the best :beerwave:

Mostly Vallejo, slowly phasing out (takes quite a while to use all the paint in the bottles) all the game colors for model and air ones.
And I still keep 2 whole sets of Rackham paints.

:D

at least they are not like Tamiya ones (taste + smell is horrible, luckily smell usually warns me in time)

Primarily Vallejo, a few Reaper, very few Citadel, some are now 20+ years old as those are in proper bottles, Winsor & Newton Oils and Acrylics.

Dropped off buying Citadel as they are no longer anywhere near value for money.

Used to be all Citadel, but I'm phasing them out and am now majority Vallejo. Like most everybody, though, I have paints from lots of companies, bought for various reasons over the years.

i got used to the old citadel paints(old as in the ones before last years revamp), really hard to change my set schemes for painting metals and skin tones. but i´m going to try vallejo and reaper as i run out of the old gw paints.

I use a mix of Citadel, Foundry, and Vallejo. I mainly use Citadel's Base, Dry, Metallic, and Washes (Shades?) and along with Foundry paints I'll use them if I'm not painting in lots of layers. I favour Vallejo if I'm watering down the paint and building up layers.

For me it's classic citadel while it lasts and so CdA too, but Reaper is gaining ground fast. If VMC separated less I would be more inclined to use them but as it is I tend to pass them over unless a particular colour really catches my eye (Intense Blue is so gorgeous I fear I'll be using it on every mini for some time). A modest number of P3 are in the pile too but I'm not really familiar with them yet.

Variety is good but not necessary.

I have been building and painting models since around 1980. I have quite a few bottles of paint. I prefer bottle to pots for the obvious reasons but I deal well with the pots I have.
I have complete sets & by complete, I mean every single one in the entire range of the following:
Vallejo Game Color,
Vallejo Game Extra Opaque,
Vallejo Model Color,
Vallejo Model Air,
Vallejo Pigments,
Andrea Color Paints (60ea.),
All the Andrea Color Paint Sets (ie. Flesh, Red, Black, White, ect.),
Andrea Pigments,
MIG Pigments,
Forge World Weathering Powders,
Reaper Master Series Paint (MSP),
MSP High Density,
Bager's Minitaire,
Privateer Press Formula P3,
Games Workshop (the previous set),
Games Workshop Foundation Paints,
Van Gogh H2Oil (water soluble oil colors that require no solvents and can be thinned with water)

In addition to this I have several bottles of Daler Rowney FW Acrylic Artist Inks, Tamiya Color Acrlyic Paint, MIG Productions 502 Abteilung Oils and a few other brands for trials for various techniques.

Of all the paints I own the Vallejo paint ranges are the ones I use the most and the GW paints the least. My newest additions are the Andrea Paint Sets which I am starting to love. They are proving to be very useful and they speed up things quite a bit. I have many paint ranges for a few reasons, first with many different ranges I get many shades, tones and hues of a color. I probably have 60 different Reds to choose from. With this in mind blending is much faster because I don't really need to mix colors. I just grab the next darker or lighter color and go. Without the need to mix much, color consistency is not much of a concern. I can easily paint an army with consistent colors across the entire army. Second, I love variety. I like having plenty to choose from.

Now, does this mean you need all this? Of course not. With what I now know I would advise a new person entering the hobby to buy, if they can afford it, the Vallejo Game Color Set, Vallejo Model Color Set or the Reaper Master Series Paint set. After you get one of these sets in their entirety you won't need much else. Once you've had the opportunity to use them you may want to try the Andrea and Privateer Press Formula P3 paints. They're also very good but don't have the variety of Vallejo or Reaper.

Please bare in mind I've been painting miniature since I was 14 years old, stopped for a bit while in the Army for 22 years then picked up with my full attention in 2005. Now, I'm retired and all I do is shoot and clean my weapons, take care of my kids, and paint miniatures. Life is good. I'm about to buy the new Scale75 paints from Spain. I hope this helps.

Good luck and stay frosty.

I used to be a real GW and Vallejo fan. But eventually, GW paints became expensive, and the quality of Vallejo became inconsistent - I've had some really naff batches of Vallejo paint, and it really irritated me. I switched over to P3, and am much happier now - the quality is more consistent, the colours cover very well, and it doesn't fight Tamiya Paint Thinner.

But I've still got loads of Vallejos that are of good quality, and now I just mix and match as needed.

Using Acrylics - I primarily use Vallejo and Reaper with Citadels for metals. I am starting to use more and more Garage Kits with the airbrush, but they have some really nice transparent colors.

Vallejo for the most part. Although I prefer Army Painter for metals. I also use alot of GW paints at work, although I despise the majority of them.

Mostly Vallejo here as well. The few citadel paints I have left I actually transferred into empty Vallejo type bottles I picked up.

Addendum to my remarks: I have tried some of the Andrea and new Scale 75 paint sets and must admit that I am greatly impressed with the quality of both sets.

GW and Vallejo. over here paints other thatn those two are very hard to come by, so i haven't had much room to try new stuff. i would really love to try P3, Reaper, and Andrea though.

I'm entirely dependent on Citadel paints, still trying to get used to the new ones though. They separate so quickly now I have to shake them up again after only a couple of hours break. Also the metals... so many different names for effectively the same colour!?! I'm sure I'll figure them out though. :dazed:
