What camera do you guys have?

Im thinking of picking up a new camera soon and I\'d like and upgrade over my nikon coolpix 4600. I need an f/stop setting, macro, adjustable white balance, adjustable exposure and it must be digital(for all the wise crackers out there :p) what do you guys recommend?

Personally, I can\'t even get my camera to work right, half the time, so I don\'t recommend listening to any camera advice I might have. :)

I\'d actually suggest looking at the Canon web-site, though. I have two friends that are semi-pro photographers, and they both use Canon\'s.

I use a Nikon D80 which I am very happy with along with a 60mm Macro lense :D

But at the end of the day it depends on how much you want to spend on a decent camera.

If you want a reasonably non-expensive camera, a compact digital camera, I can recommend Canon\'s PowerShot series. I have one (have forgotten the exact product number) with manual settings on everything you might need. I don\'t know if the white balance is fully manual, but you can at least set it for a number of different lighting conditions and I haven\'t investigated it further. I have taken all my recent miniature shots with it and I\'m very happy with the performance vs price. There\'s probably newer models than mine out now.

i just got a sony a200, but i don\'t know how to use it yet...
my memory card arrived last week, 2 weeks after the camera, so i had a nice $600 paperweight for a while...stupid sony...
i was usin\' a fuji finepix a500 for the last 2 years, and it works just fine, but the extra 5 megapixels on a high-end camera really makes a difference when zoomin\' in on sections of detail...

i\'ll post some pics over the next couple weeks as i learn how to use this new beast...

cheers

40D and 400D. Which are both great :) A 5D mkII beckons though....

Canon G9 will be going cheap soon. Panasonic Lumix FZ?? are worth a look too.

Powershot and Coolpix are good, cheaper options.

I have a Sony alpha 300. It is a digital SLR (because I dabble in photography) and it has about 10.2 mega pixels and it is excellent. Fairly cheap for a digital SLR too. It has features up the yin yang and I highly recommend it to anyone who is willing to spend the money.

I must say that if you are not sure how to use an SLR do not waste your money.

Not going to list them all, but for mini\'s I have a Nikon Coolpix 5000 which I\'ve used for a few years and a Nikon D300 which I\'m attemping to get to grips with.
Manual is more complex than a Microsoft SQL Server Book. lol

@spacemunkie: i\'ve been playin\' with the nikon d40x all year...that\'s what convinced me to buy a dslr for myself...i would have bought that model, but sony had a sale in august...a 10.2mp with 2 lenses for 6 bills, and shipped free...

@aliengod: how can ya learn how to use a dslr without buyin\' one...it\'s kind of a fold or go all in situation...

@DR: i was suprised that my 17\" vaio with all the extras didn\'t come with any kind of instructions, but the camera came with an encyclopedia!!!

my new camera does damn near everything, includin\' gettin\' girls naked:twisted:...it doesn\'t make dinner though...that\'ll probably be next year\'s feature...

cheers

Been hanging on to my wonderful 20D for a good few years now......take my mini pics on manual settings in RAW format and do all the colour balancing from there.

and I too, will probably get a 5D Mk2, when the price begins to drop after it\'s release. If I get a little mortorised display turntable thingy, I\'ll be able to post an HD movie of the mini rotating!

Nikon? I think not! EOS 40D.... ;)

@Orb: Video is not something that really interests me for my own use, but I\'m doing lots at work now. I\'m trying to convince my boss that he needs to buy me one... :)

@MathewBaich, looking at the photos of friends and family over recent years I\'d have to say go with (in no particular order) a Sony, Canon or Nikon. They seem to consistently provide the best picture quality.

Get the best you can afford. And personally I\'d go with higher resolution over macro magnification (since you can artificially zoom by cropping down a higher-res image more than the higher magnification will tend to provide).

Good reviews and test images are available on a couple of sites, my fav is Imaging Resource which has a direct side-by-side comparison feature that I think is very handy.

I\'d not recommend a Fuji or Konica Minolta unless you see the image quality for that model firsthand. My brother got burned three times with Fujis and I\'m not happy with the noise levels on my DiImage Z3 although I love the functionality.

I still use my old Sony Cybershot P100. It was a great camera for the price but I really need to get myself a better one. Maybe a Christmas present to myself! :)

Research! But you have a point. I guess I should further my statement by saying that I first purchased a 35mm Canon Rebel (SLR), for a school photography class, and they walked me through the features as did the camera store I bought the Canon from. So for those interested purchase from a camera store or find some tutorials online or purchase a photography magazine :)
